Description A painting of an aquatic dragon I've been working on for the past few days. I wanted to create an atmosphere in which the normally alien world of the water appears more calm, hospitable and familiar than the surface.

I've been doing a lot of smaller work, getting into the habit of painting every day with the intention of working my way up to bigger, more complex pieces. It's hard for me to work on any one image for long periods of time, so let's see how that goes.

I find myself automatically turning my head to compensate for the horizon This oneΒ΄s gorgeous - you pulled him off really well. I love the play of the light on the body, and the feel of size.

Awesome position! This is so inspiring to me!
The colors are brillant, the greens carried throughout give a swampy- creepy vibe yet the expression makes me feel like the dragon like critter is curious yet calm. So despite the green colors making a creepy feel of 'swamp monsters/etc', It looks frendly or not or anything in the horror scene.

This reminds me of those ocean puzzles where the dolphins are jumping and it's underwater and surface... except this is more epic. I would buy this as one of those puzzles. And it would be glow in the dark. FFF, more magical..

How many sailing ships of old were caught by such "points of ground" in the middle of the night? lol. Okay, I know that's probably not what you were after, but the tales of sea monsters always come up around such images. How neat to see it in this fashion, and think, "maybe the sea monsters have their own similar tales about terrible humans."

As for the atmosphere you wanted to create with this vision, my only thought in the matter is "dead on". Very nice.

It's probably a good thing that you cant work for verry long on one painting. A great teacher once told me to never work on one painting for more than an hour or two at a time, after a while i guess you go into auto pilot and make verry bad descisions, its not good to over work the paint either. Great job I love the light and color, warm and cool tones.

Its not that you arn't supposed to stop painting, your supposed to stop looking at the same painting. It's when you've been concentrating on somthing for so long, that you lose relativity, especially in the beginning. You have to stop, step back, and eventually let it rest for a while. Why do you think it is that you dont realize how shitty or awesome somthing really is, or the obvious mistake untill the next day? Because you didnt let your mind rest.

I see what your getting at, but if you feel the wave, ride it. Stepping back, or even out of the room for a break can do wonders....putting a time limit on 'how long one should paint for' took my breath away at first, thats all! ~Cheers!!

I love it, Hibbary! Gorgeous. Keep up the good work. It's artists such as yourself that inspire me to work hard and try and complete something every day!

I love the composition and the frayed appearance of the edge of the painting just makes it that much more special.

If anything what I would suggest is t try out a different shaped composition; perhaps circular or triangular. Could be interesting to see how the shape of the paper/ canvas affects the outcome of the composition as a whole!
