Description I am putting a 'clean' version in my scraps for anyone who wants to see it but can't because of Deviantart's new rules: [link]

A deity of birth and creation. He/she (we seriously need a gender ambiguous pronoun in english) is responsible for forming new life by forming fetuses out of water. He/she is also the patron of stillbirths, those which were too beloved to be thrust into existence.

The word 'it' is too generic. 'It' could refer to absolutely anything. I mean a pronoun that means just a person. Not specifically a hermaphrodite, but just.... a human person. We haven't got one. And I want one. I am told that the finnish language has them, and I am totally envious. I am getting some suggestions and things, though, so keep 'em comin'. If there really is one, or if someone is trying to get one into circulation, I'm ready to take it up.

Takin' a break from commissions. Time to work on something fun. I realize that I'm better off working on things that I enjoy, even at risk of alienating people. I believe strongly in hermaphroditism, more in the metaphorical sense than literal. In this case, the literal is used as a stand-in for gender ambiguity, one of my chief interests.

Matured on account of those horrible body parts.

Lovely picture

In Hungarian, we have only non-gender pronouns Makes life a lot easier He/She is just the word "ő" but I guess that wouldn't go well into the English language XD

When I had a strong faith I believed they everything had been created from clay and brought to life. No one put this idea in my head I just somehow thought of it own my own in middle school. I love the idea of an anthropomorphic deity forming life :3

I too agree that we need a pronoun for dual gender, and possibly one for neither gender.
Loving the image, and boo to the rules >C means a good piece of art has to be defaced to be viewed XP

A beautiful piece as always

I always use 'They' it's more 'ersonal'/ 'human' (as in, making the person 'real' instead of an object) than 'it', its not offensive and not assuming either.

.. i hate being pregnant and not knowing yet if the baby is a she or a he, because everyone tends to call .. um... it. an.. it. o.o imean, what else do you say? the baby. and "it" gives the impression that she/he's an animal or an object.

anyway, I love the art, it spoke very powerfully to me as a mother (esp. with another on the way.. oh god don't let it be a stillbirth..).. really enjoyed the sense of movement from the water and the cloth, and you did very well capturing the subtle expression in their face.. the head slightly at an angle.. it's great :}

I wish I could think of a good pronoun; there really does need to be one. I typically use s/he but that only works so well because I write it rather than speak it. Well, both the existing gender specific ones have 'he' in them; maybe another consonant besides s in front would make a suitable word?

Ever read into Hindu mythology? If you want to know more about deities that are of both gender then that's where to go. Let's see . . . damn I can remember the name (and I'm pretty sure in Sanscript there is a term that is synonymous to what your describing), the closest thing is the Atman of early Hindu myths and Krishna of the Mahabharata. Both embody the universal self into one self (all sexs, gods, demon, sinners, saints, etc) . Another great place to look is in creation myths. One of them involves the Creator god who is all alone in the universe, but resembles a man and a woman embracing. He/she desired progeny so he/she split into he and she. From these two, all beings arise. There's more detail then that, but I bet you can google it and find out more. Hope this helps.
oh and +fav

Shhee is one that was used in a DC comic book a few years ago, and I use it when I make multi-gendered characters.

Cie is the 'acceptable' (or, wikied up) currently pressed version from some other sci fi book somewhere I think.

'They' is perfectly acceptable in literature for 'erson of unknown gender'. I use it when I can, because I don't like forcing gender on folks either

in reference to the pronoun thing...

A few people in the headily academic linguistic world have tried using "co" (possessive: "cos") but, so far, it hasn't caught on... I personally like the idea of a gender-ambiguous pronoun and I wish it would stick...

(btw: NICE artwork. You have this amazing talent for fur. The fetus is creepy in a beautiful way... but to me, all fetuses are, so that's a good thing. I love you to bits.)

very attractive. And the pronoun that is commonly used (at least in the communities I am a part of) is sie/hir. for example: You can clearly see that sie isn't a male or a female, but both. Or: Hir methodology is quite unique.

Hope that helps.

Awesome work and concept. Btw, isnt there a term to represent both sex's like... androgu...something or other. Though i beleave that means more along the lines of feminine looking man. Anyways, really great peice ^.^

Jc2theW In reply to KRTR [2007-10-20 05:18:02 +0000 UTC]

I believe the term you are looking for is androgynous. This basically means that a person can be very boyish/girlish looking and that people who look at them cannot tell what sex/gender they are.

it's not a PHYSICAL description persay, just the term when no one can guess your sex/gender.
I know this because I am a male who sometimes looks like a girl. (which I don't see AT ALL) but meh.

Hope that helps.

Actually, androgenous only applies to something which is neither here nor there, or ambiguous. I think (not positive) that Hibbs character here is *bigendered*, hermaphroditic. Not positive.

You do have a point. I was just replying to the said comment of what word the one guy was looking for. This is a "hermaphroditic" picture for sure. I actually think there is a new word instead of hermaphrodite, but can't remember what it is exactly.

He/She/It/Me (Like may)
His/Hers/Mes (Like maze)

Now we have one. It's easy to say, easy to spell, and looks nice.

I've always used s/he for such things, if only because it's easy to type. There's also "shemale". I wonder if the transgender community has any terms for it?

Anyway, excellent work, as ever. Wonderful linework and interesting symbolism. Home-made creation deity or based on something?

Just a quick thought on censorship in general... if society didn't make such a big deal about hiding all these "bad" things from us as long as it possibly can... would kids even care? Like if you're a kid who grew up in a nudist colony are you going to be shocked by photos of someone's genitals? Doubtful... you'd more than likely say "I've seen bigger" and be done with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draconiangem In reply to Treyos [2007-10-20 04:01:35 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Because of the "extreme" censorship, a lot of children grow up learning that that a reproductive organ is "bad" and grow up scared and sometimes even phobic of even the most simplest of artistic portrayals of them.
