Description Was doiking around with charcoal pencils while on my forced hiatus from the internet.

Set is kind of a funny chap. The egyptians never really had any one established design for him. In some images he's got sort of a goat face, and in some he's got more of an extended rabbit face. Sometimes he even looks like a crow with ears. Peculiar. The only thing that really seems to stay the same are the shape of his ears (though they are sometimes much larger or smaller depending) and the sloping snout. In any case, I felt like making him a little more dog-esque.

Looks like a cross between a dobermann and a bull terrier (which is damn close to the image I've always had of him).

Cool shading!

While I'm mostly a believer in the Greek gods, I always found the Egyptian gods to be pretty damn cool. I guess that makes me an eclectic pagan.

Maybe the Egyptians depicted him as so because he was the god of chaos and therefore did not have a stable form but a chaotic form, like shape shifting.

Very nice work ^_^

You're right, his design is a bit strange. I remember Seth has long ears, and I've always seen him dog-esque. According to wiki he was represented as an aardvark and sometimes a jackal.
Fantastic picture btw

I have always wondered what kind of animal Set was in the first place. He looks like a cross between an anteater and a donkey, with large rabbit ears. But I'm betting he could also be a dog-like creature, albeit more demonic, similar to Anubis. Your pic is fun and interesting, and reminds me of the Rick Riordan novel The Red Pyramid.

The problem with Set is, I think, that he is the representation of foreigness, and of utter chaos within nature. Depicting that using animals consistently throughout the ages is hard. Not to mention, Set's role in the pantheon changed a LOT--he has been everything from the Egyptian Satan to being the right-hand man of the chief gods.

Wow, that is beautiful. The blend of various designs seems perfect and the red of the highlights fits amazingly. That's how the evil guy of Egyptian myths should really look like

Heh. Setty looks pissed about something. >D

Mayhap the fact that his wife slept with his (and her) brother thus spawned Anubis, didn't get to be all high and mighty, finally killed his bro then was defeated by his nephew...? -chuckle- Poor Setty.

...And maybe because people are guessing your species... x3 The Egyptians never really told anybody Set's species exactly. -frown-

Ever since I played the PC game Age of Mythology, Set has been my hero. I've since researched him a little too, but you beat me to drawing him. I love the choice of lighter pencils on dark paper. NICE.

Wow! I think you really captured Seth in a way he deserves . And the red really accents his malevolent nature.

I bet that's what those Egyptian fellows imagined him (even though they depict him differently every time ).

There are so many egyptian depictions of Set and he always look different so I made my own look: like Anubis, with jackal face...well.

Great picture, I just love your depiction of my favorite deity. Especially teeth

That's true, Set is not determined to a know animal form, as the other Egyptian gods are. Mostly the depictions remind maybe of a donkey-headed man, but in fact some also talk of the Set animal being one of its own (fabulous) kind. Anyway, this artwork is great, as it captures the aggressive and impulsive nature of this dark god and the red light coming from the left is most fitting to the context.

Set's not evil, just misunderstood. Without him, there would be no creative chaos, so no art or music, etc. He is pretty cool. And this picture is amazing. It's so detailed, and I love the red in it, it makes him look kinda scary.

A lovely picture of a very interesting God. For some reason, I always think Set is a snake - too much Conan - early Robert E. Howard.

But then, which of the Egyptian Gods was the Jackal? Such interesting creatures, but when one considers that at the height of it's power, Rome received tribute from places as far away as the jungles of Africa, it stands to reason the Egyptians would have known of animals we don't associate with them.

This is really good. The red lighting in the darkness with the white light makes it look like he's in some sort of cave with a hole in the roof and maybe some fire or laval beside him? Possibly red light from an unholy symbol dedicated to him...

I think set's head is supposed to be a mix between a jackal and a donkey. Mostly donkey, but with some jackal like features, such as sharp teeth...

anyways, I've seen many different faces of Set on dA, I love this picture of my favourite god of any pantheon anywhere, <3
