Description
After my epic fail at realistic painting, I decided to cool off and do something experimental for fun.I am sure this is inspired by one of my very favorite DA artists whose beautiful, antique looking illustrative work is just.... some of the best on the site. And some of my favorite, period.
Usually, I am extremely allergic to warm colors, and so I resolved to start with a very warm, very dark wash and see where it went from there. With somewhat surprising results. I like some parts better than others, but on the whole (considering I hadn't the slightest idea of what I was doing) it turned out fairly well.
I'm still waffling on the border. Leaving it alone makes the image much more open, and somewhat unfinished. I considered going over it with a dark green wash, which would close in the picture and pop the red forward like crazy. Or to just mat it with the image alone, and don't do a thing with the border, as it would be covered up.

This is just beautiful. The fox looks especially striking, but maybe I'm just biased.
Hmm, as for the border, I can see it having leaves for a border. I'm seeing a blending green (it looks summer), with the stalks facing the outskirts of the paper, and the tips facing inwards, toward the image. Perhaps maple leaves? And slightly overlapping each other at times? Hope that makes sense... Then again, I am just a novice telling you what she sees in her head. XD

Let me add too, that I think the unfinished quality of the image is what gives it strength and really drops a great deal of depth into it! It is very sweet and peaceful.

I have to say, the thing that captures my imagination most is the fact that you have included us along with the little white dragon as spies on their conversation. You've made us part of the story.

Again, just divine. Despite your internal quarrel as to what to do with the border, I really appreciate the unfinished look of it. It's a very welcoming photo -- like I could be invited to play any moment.

What media, other than wash, did you use to illustrate this. I would guess pastels or something of a similar nature on top of the wash. I love the colors and the concept. It really makes me think "what exactly is that fox telling them?"

No, I don't believe I used any pastel. It's all watercolor and acrylic ink. I think I may have used a white pen.... I don't remember now.

Wow. It looks so well blended and more controlled in some areas than I thought you could get out of water colors. Great job, man. I have yet to really give watercolor a decent shot. I've piddled around with it a bit, but nothing too serious. It's amazing to me to see the control some people can get out of it. Awesome!

It looks like something from an old storybook. I think it looks great even without a real border because the sort of neutral tone matches the distant red background and they sort of... hold together. C:

Beautiful work, well deserving of praise. Again, it draws me in with ideas and thoughts on the story you could have been trying to tell. This kind of thing fills that illustrative work niche very well, and makes me believe you could bring many a book to life if you so chose.
