Description So, I love you to death PJ for making Kili and Fili who they are, but I'll never forgive you for pushing Fili to the side to make room for Tauriel and then ruining the most important scene in the entire trilogy for making Kili's death about her, instead of about brothers and family.

Drawn by Clawshawt to cheer me up after the third movie made me so sad and angry. I just lined and colored it :]

"Yeah, but Tauriel was a pretty poorly written character. It felt as though a teenage girl had written herself into a version of the Hobbit.

Ooh, I should be an elf. And Legolas is in love with me. But his dad won't allow it. And I'm an awesome archer, and also good with knives. And then there's this really hot dwarf and he falls in love with me. And then I save his life with Elven magic just life Arwen did. OMG fanfiction.com will love it." - Dude on Reddit

Is she in the Movie? I dont remember that much of her in the books.... And that actually does sound like a Mary Sue... Why would they include her?? :<

Yes. They added her in the movie and exactly She is a pointless Mary Sue.

But why did they? It doesnt seem right, and anyone who sees her can see that she screams Mary Sue :0

They added her in to add more female presence into the largely male dominated cast. A feat that was noble in and of itself but, as you may have guessed, was handled very poorly. Such a waste!

Better if they didnt add her at all. I mean I do agree that the feat is very well meaning but...... It was unnecessary...... And if I have to Watch Out for Her in the Movie then I'm unsure if I should look forward to it then...

Have you not seen the movies yet?

I personally don't think adding her was entirely unnecessary. It was that stupid, contrived love triangle and her "love" story with Kili that was. That was what really ruined her character and the story itself. They should have removed that, lessened Tauriel's screentime and not allowed her presence to alter the story as much as it did. I thought she started off OK but steadily got worse as the movies progressed.

No I've been waiting for a Perfect Chance to Watch it (Since Ive read the Books I'm curious)

But from what Ive read about the Movie this character had a big impact on the Movie that brought it down. My question is WHY though? Why add the Love Triangle? And the Romance? Arent the books the best when they dont change anything or add anything and do it as it was said?? :<

BeautyAndStrength In reply to DiamondEyedGemini [2016-12-06 03:59:34 +0000 UTC]

I feel the same way. I don't know the exact reason why they felt the need to include any romance since the book was great without it. One theory that is floating around (and I don't know if this is true or not) is that the lead writer, Phillipa Boyens, had a crush on Aiden Turner, who plays Kili and added Tauriel to be her own self-insert character. Actually, she apparently reinvented her since the character was really created by Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro and had a different name, was going to be played by a younger actress and was actually going to be cool without any romantic ties. But as soon as Boyens came on the scene she changed the character's name, picked an older actress (due to underage issues) and added the romance and eventually the love triangle. Not to mention she gave the character a boatload of horrendous dialogue, especially in the third film. I can't even really watch those again. There are other great scenes in these movies, but those are not part of that list.

Oh okay and hmm that seems likely I figured it was because they didnt want "Some People" to get mad at the fact that the movie didnt have female leads... And is the Dialogue really that bad??? o.o

I thought the movies were good...

The movies did have their fair share of good scenes and bad scenes. Not to mention the third film had a lot of WTF scenes that still boggle my mind to this day.  And yes, the dialogue was pretty bad. Thankfully it was just with Tauriel and it really only happened in the third film. They did make a few small changes to the story that I actually were good, like adding more scenes taken from the Lost Tales and giving us an explanation as to where Gandalf disappeared to every time he left.

I wish it was just Tauriel, but sadly no. The movies has other flaws as well, many others. Since you've read the book you will definitely spot them.

If only... If only...
I first didn't mind that they added a female character into the trilogy, I was actually looking forward to it, but holy sh**... I tried to have an open mind for her, but after the thrid movie I was so filled with anger, no, hate and frustration, that she nearly ruined everything for me in the movie (Thank Mahal for goldsick!Thorin and the rest of the good written characters). Not only because the strong family bond of the Durins was, 'cause of the lack of screentime, poorly shown, but also because of this oh so romantic ''Love''-Triangle... (Fíli is the fricking heir of Erebor for godness sake! )
''I want to bury him.'' EXCUSE ME?! You've known him for what- three or four days? and you have nearly spoken with eachother and YOU want to bury him under moon- and starlight?! I seriously saw cold strength, brutal honesty and ''I don't give two f**** about anything'' badassery in her, but was soon to be disappointed. We should have needed such a character! Like a huge counterpart of Arwen. THAT would have been interessting.
Nothing against the actress. She is pretty good, but the character was just unnecessary.

My opinion of Tauriel and the romance in general was always very mixed. At the beginning I was very unsure about it all. Tauriel wasn't in the book and including her just seemed weird to me. She seemed too perfect, too much of a Mary Sue. And the romance didn't feel real to me at all.

But, I tried to be open minded about it anyway. I figured that Tauriel had potential to be good as long as they shaped her character out a little bit more in the third film and made her better. I didn't really mind her that much in the beginning to be honest. I thought it was kind of nice to have another female in the story and I liked her strength. I even thought that the romance had potential as well, as long as they shaped it out a bit more and didn't let it overshadow the familial relationships and all else.

So yeah, when I saw the third film I was sorely disappointed on all accounts. I thought they made Tauriel worse than before and I was disgusted by how poorly Fili was treated. I really felt like they screwed him and the strong bond he had with Kili over just so that they could focus on the romance. They totally sacrificed the family aspect for it.

As a person who comes from a large family of seven siblings whom I am really close with,  I will never get over it! That's why in my Fili-x-reader fic The Healer's Student I'm going to try and fix it while still keeping some of the romance too.

Anyway, although I don't quite agree with everything you said, I will fav this anyway since I have some resentment towards Tauriel because of what happened. Plus, Tauriel's face makes me giggle.

Um, sorry for ranting at you.

And also for you both that drew this, if the genders were switched and instead the Hobbit and all of the characters were female, would you still be saying the same thing about how it must focus on sisterhood, love and family and some guy just came in and ruined it? Oh and fanfiction is not just for "girls" PLENTY of guys (even straight/bisexual guys) like it as well. And how incredibly rude to assume that the idea of Tauriel would be written by a "young girl". You're basically saying that teenage girls are somehow dumb and not worthy of being taken seriously. When young men could just as easily be writing those type of stories. Another thing you should know. It's not just Peter Jackson writing the movies, it's also his wife Fran Walsh and their good friend Philippa Boyens too. But of course, as director he has the final say. But still he's not the only filmmaker of the films. And Tauriel is actually a great character. It's kind of ridiculous to hate a character JUST because she's not a part of the canon books. Not liking someone makes more sense if it's based on the personality of the character. But even then it would be hard to because she's an awesome character. She's tough, smart, kind-hearted and a true badass. Would you like her more if she wasn't a romantic interest for anybody? Oh and since Kili was deeply in love with Tauriel he not be "smiling" like he is in this picture. He would be pissed off and ready to punch Fili for doing that. Oh and of course I'm not surprised that you like Reddit. It's one of the most sexist, homophobic, racist sites on the internet.

Wow.... what a disgusting misogynist you are. Tauriel was an awesome character, and since there was hardly any female representation in the series it was quite refreshing  to see a character like her in the films. I feel sorry that you have such a problem with women.... how sad

HideTheDecay In reply to Saucybabe [2015-05-04 12:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Assumptions, assumptions. First off, I am a woman. Nice job there. Second off, who gives a shit if there was hardly any female representation in the series? It is a brilliant series either way. Third off, just because I happen to think a forced romance that makes absolutely no sense and ruins the family dynamic of the most important characters in the movies was entirely unnecessary, an opinion which clearly differs from your own, doesn't mean you need to come onto my page and insult me. Grow up.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who's got issues with Tauriel as a character. Especially when Fili doesn't get even nearly enough screen time!

People seem split on her, but it feels like there's not that many people that take issue with it for the same reason I do -- it causes them to downplay the family aspect.

Always-The-Dreamer In reply to HideTheDecay [2015-03-22 06:57:20 +0000 UTC]

THAT IS EXACTLY MY PROBLEM WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!! Aside from the fact that she is simply a terrible, poorly developed character, they alter the Durins' family dynamics in order to accommodate her presence, and it really angers me that Fili is shunted into the background for a romance that shouldn't even be there! It's as though they are saying that familial love is not as important or poignant as romantic attachments, however unrealistic that supposed 'love' may be. *growls*

I knooow. It's like no one gets it. It upsets me waaay more than it probably should, but it really does :[ I'm so glad someone gets it. I'm so attached to the Durin family and because of that bit of the third movie I honestly am not interested in seeing it ever again which makes me so sad because I looove the Hobbit.

Definitely an improvement; although there is that moment where Thorin calls out for Kili without Fili because originally Kili's still alive when Fili is dead... But overall, yes. This is most certainly preferable, yes. Thank you for sharing this with me; I feel a little better now.

I was so irritated by how much the healing scene was a copy of Arwen's that it was part of the basis for my current RP, where Tauriel never got a chance to be the one who healed Kíli (a Silmaril did it). I was even more annoyed when I started watching the DoS Appendices to find out her incantation was a translation of one of Arwen's lines as well.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I just don't get why they had to stuff some ridiculous lovey dovey stuff in yet another movie. They could've added a female character to avoid getting lynched and NOT involve any romance bullshit.

I wanted to bawl my eyes out while watching Thorin, Fili and Kili die fighting side by side and then Tauriel just strides in and ruins everything. I wasn't very amused.
