Description picture is a speed painting of me. took about 20 minutes.

as for the title:

while i fully respect the concept of going to art school, i am very, very sick of seeing art students sticking their noses in the air at those of us who do not go to art school.

yes, art school can teach you many things. me, i'm self-taught. i have been told that because of this my art lacks versatility in style, that i can't comprehend human anatomy and that i can't draw realism.

every time i get told that sort of thing, it just inspires me to prove them wrong, which coincidentally causes my art to improve.

an artist's work should be judged by the work itself. not whether you have a degree.

anyhow, i felt this was an interesting read: [link]

This is a fascinating work! I think that people have entirely too many opinions on what is regarded as art, and what isn't. I'm mostly self taught as well (my Mom taught me a lot). I've heard people judged for all sorts of perceived lacking, and it makes me wonder...why bother? Why not just enjoy the spirit and wonder of art? Ah well.

This is beautiful and I hope to see more wonderful work like this from you again!

Art is such a personal thing. I wish more people understood that and approached it with sensitivity and grace.

Amen...
I may have gone to art school for most of my life- but I didn't show any progress on my anatomy or figure drawings or whatever it is during the school year. The time when I grew most in my art was during summer when all I would do is draw/build/sew/etc. and read tutorials and do them MYSELF.
Art school teaches you about what things are called- and what products are used in making the art- but you, the person, put the effort into it and create it.

People say I am good at what I do because I went to art school or because I was BORN with the talent- I say it's because I wanted to improve, and did. Sheer effort and nothing else.
That is all it takes. -nods-

awesome! this is amazing for 20 minutes.

I can agree with you. you don't need a degree to produce great art, you and many others I've seen here prove that. You shouldn't worry about the douches, you have plenty of fans here that have your back!

thanks. and yeah, it's a shame people don't realize it. i wait for the day when art students and self-taught folk can all live together in harmony.

I read the description, and that's so true! The only reason I decided to go to an art school is because it was a special school with slow tempo, so I could do things my own way (and really I barely learn anything new there, and spend most my lessons sleeping with my face on the desk)
Education, knowledge and intelligence is important, but school on the other hand is another matter

it can be useful, i just hate when people judge others just because they have/haven't gone to school.

Maybe it could, but not in my school |D
It's just sad when people judge others based on such things

Years ago, I applied to a school and received an acceptance, but I had no real intention of going--it was a metric to gauge my ability. The reality is that, more often than not, it's a waste of money and the degree means bugger all--any renowned artist will tell you the same. Those who genuinely believe otherwise are under the wrong impression of what merits can be found within an art degree.

i agree very much. i've seen amazing self-taught artists and people with art degrees who could barely draw generic anime. i've also of course seen art students with good skills and self-taught with bad. i think people rely too much on whether you've got that paper or not, rather than looking at the art itself.

Well, my point is that generally very little emphasis is placed on whether a person possesses as degree or not from the people whose opinions actually matter--companies that are looking for potential employees will be more concerned about the items in your portfolio than whether your submissions are endorsed by a seal of quality from one particular school or another, and clients offering their finances for your services have already been convinced of your capacity to produce what renditions they require (again, through having seen examples of your work). They let your work speak for itself because this is one of the few professions that allows for an employer to directly evaluate the capacity of their potential employees before placing them into practice. In any other job, the hiring company will either have to take the endorsement of a specialized training institution that you care capable of the filling their job requirements, or spend hours and resources observing you in controlled environments to evaluate and conclude for themselves whether you're capable of filling the job--which simply isn't practical.
There was a poll held a while back, asking the members of a prestigious art community (the kind that often contribute to movie productions, game development, or just monthly publications) how many among them possess degrees in their field and how many of them are entirely self-taught. Over 90% responded in the latter, additionally discouraging the process of acquiring a degree or investing hours and resources into courses on the subject they are currently experts in. The results should speak for themselves.

seriously? wow, i wish i had known that earlier. i'd save the poll or something. i couldn't begin to tell you how many art students have told me over the years that i'd never amount to anything as an artist without a degree. i might get lucky and i might not, but i will certainly never give up.
