I haven't seen the winning entries but they'd have to be ridiculous to beat out your submissions. Keep at it, and take notes about the stuff that did make it, see what factors they have in common and practice some of those concepts for your next piece.

The biggest thing is style. One of the artist draws in a rather heavily Anime inspired style, but makes up for it looking very.... Diablo 3-ish? I don't know... All I know is that I need to learn to color better....

These days I'd probably murder someone to be able to color like you (especially now when I need to!), but presuming there's some way to improve your work I'd say experiment, try a technique you wouldn't normally do, switch up your brush presets maybe?

I've been trying to paint with just solids more than soft brushes. I like the texture it produces but the effect gets lost when the images get scaled down.
Also, with lack of time (and sometimes motivation), I've been doing some plainer stuff just to get stuff out the door.
