Description This is going to be a landing tawny owl with wings open. The wings and tail are not ready yet, so I didn't include them in the picture.

How cute is this! When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was a photo of a really cute real owl

What is the beak made of? Have you ever thought about doing tutorials/showing making ofs? I don't think I would ever have the patience for even the smallest felting (?) / needlework, but still I'm interested to see how these come to "life".

Thank you!

The beak is made of polymer clay.

I have been thinking about making a tutorial, and I'm probably going to make one at some point, but not yet. It's still so often that I notice that I've made something in a much more complicated way than necessary, or maybe in a wrong order or something like that... d: So I don't feel like I should make a tutorial quite yet. Also, there already are many very good needle felting tutorials on YouTube, for example. And Kiyoshi Mino has a couple of making of-videos there too, I highly recommend checking them out if you're interested in seeing the whole process of making a needle felted animal.

Needle felting does require some patience, and can be quite slow sometimes, but I definitely recommend trying it!

Well, it definitely looks like you know what you are doing!

What do you think how many hours you'll work on this whole bird including the wings and tail (from your experience with the other birds)? Or don't you count the hours at all?
I'm just asking because I know how much time (and also patience) it takes to make a detailed illustration, and know nothing about work like this.

I haven't counted the hours, so it's really hard to say... I'd guess that so far it's taken about 50-70h. I already started making this ~6 months ago, but there have been long periods when I haven't continued it at all. I guess that finishing it will take about 25 more hours at least.

I foolishly decided to felt the feathers on on his wings from scratch instead of using pre felt sheet, which is one of the reasons why it has taken me so long.  And like I said, I'm still rather unexperienced in needle felting, so I sometimes have to make some parts over again if they haven't turned out good enough on the first try. I'm sure that many others could make something like this much faster.

I know that this is very vague, and I'm sorry that I can't give a more accurate answer. :/
