Description Switzerland surrounded by the European Union.

As I have said before, it's kind of interesting how geography allows some places to remain independent of empires and larger powers [link] . In this case the independence is also economic. By remaining separate from the EU the Swiss have avoided much of the fallout of this current world recession.

At least, Switzerland is a free country. Screw the EU!

i once tried to make a map with EU member states and Swiss cantons, my idea was to show the fact that there are two kinda supranational states in Europe and one is an enclave in another, but eventually i managed only to make a flag, which you can see here , if you are interested.

Switzerland has been neutral in 500 years... and still, not even Sweden is more neutral than that country.

Switzerland's only really been neutral since 1815.

Sweden's was in it's last war (so far...) around that year... i guess Napoleon did quite impact.

Switzerland's irrational isolationism will only hurt in in the long term.

EU membership IS the only acceptable outcome.

Possibly.

As long as Switzerland retains its unique banking system, still highly popular internationally, they probably won't join the EU.

Swiss banking is based upon secrecy and mystery. I think the fear is that in joining the EU, the banks might be thumb-screwed by Brussels every time the stock market makes a ripple.

Haha, so true XD But we're not completely surrounded, we still have Liechtenstein. Uhm.... X)

Yeah it's interesting how Switzerland and Norway were the only European countries to get out of the recession relatively unharmed.

I think Norway will join, because even Iceland is joining and Norways oil is ending..

Iceland won't join I think. The people wanted to join when the crisis hit them but that was a long time ago. They won't vote yes now. Besides, the EU is in serious financial troubles, no sane person would join it now.
And Norway found oil and gas just four days ago.
Besides, Switzerland doesn't care about Norway and Iceland I think most Swiss don't even know that Norway and iceland aren't members of the EU.
