High resol. is very appreciated too. Your painting is really impressive : from far I just think "another fractal drawning" with photoshop (I don't hate Toshop, I use it too)...
Closern, I can resize up 2 times and it's usefull : I can "read" your infinite small paint touches... What the patience. Huge psychedelic render... Is it that do you want to do at the start ?
Just 1 thing : is it a hand to his left (right side on paint) ? I am not really sure about it. Could be a jewel, finery (?) or something else. Seems a bit weird in the first quick look.

The great thing about Photoshop is that it allows you to do practically everything, the bad is that you're using it too, and I am no exception. In my work I always like to start from a photo and then play a little and distort the image. I only stop when suddenly throwing him look at my work and I realize that for me it's okay, it's a bizarre method, but it works. This work I did some time ago and I did not mind the initial image, I seem to remember there was a hand on his shoulder and the other at the top right above your head, with your fingers on the face, in touching the eye and cheek. I do not know if the colors are excessive, even I am not a specialist, but I think that overall, with contrasts, lights and shadows work well.

Maybe the colours could be inapproriate : red, blood & flesh contrasted by the light of background.
