Personality

Defiant | Outspoken | Idealistic | Scornful | Reliable | Unforgiving | Charismatic | Shy

Defiance is etched into Doc’s very essence. From his rebellious youth to his current role as a leader, he’s always been unapologetically outspoken against what he considers to be unjust. Doc’s defiance is not just a reaction–it’s a deliberate choice to pave the way for what he believes to be a better future. Tempered by an unwavering idealism that burns bright within him, he envisions a world where all dogs are respected, regardless of their background. Having spent all his life on the streets, Doc has seen and heard all kinds of abandonment stories, which led him to develop a deep-seated scorn towards pets and their life (and humans). He can’t help but view these dogs with a mixture of disdain and pity, disregarding any value they attribute to their pampered, coddled life. To him, no dog should be this utterly dependent on their humans for survival.

Despite his rebellious nature, Doc is remarkably reliable. When he commits to a cause, he sees it through to the end, no matter the obstacles that stand in his way. His dedication to the Junkyard is unwavering, however, Doc’s reliability is matched only by his unforgiving nature. Above all else, he doesn’t tolerate betrayal. Those who betray the values of the Junkyard will find themselves facing the full force of his righteous anger. Such an unforgiving stance may seem harsh to some, but it’s born out of a deep sense of loyalty to his faction.

Charismatic and confident in his “public” persona, Doc effortlessly inspires those around him to believe in the possibility of change. However, beneath the veneer of confidence lies a deep-seated shyness, particularly when it comes to matters of intimacy and romance. Doc becomes reserved and cautious when confronted with romantic advances. He’s the master of deflection, skillfully steering conversations away from personal topics and redirecting focus onto broader issues.

Backstory

Doc’s story is not a tragic one. While it’s common for most stray dogs to have experienced abandonment, delusion, heartbreak, loneliness and all those other feelings attached to the loss of their human, Doc never got to know any of that. He was born and raised in the streets. His parents were also stray dogs, and his parents’ parents were stray dogs too. Perhaps, if one was to look way back his lineage, there was once a pet or farm canine who loved their human very deeply–but that has long been lost.

His mom was only by his side until she considered him old enough to fend for himself, and while she taught him a lot about life from a stray perspective, living it was completely different. Once he was free from his mother’s careful watch, Doc got to meet all kinds of dogs. Good and bad. You see, being a stray gives you all the freedom to roam as you please, that includes learning how to break into yards and cross farm fences. And that was when he learned, when he truly learned, that not all dogs saw themselves as equals. He was quickly punished for being so naive.

Life forced Doc to learn his way around guard dogs—after being beaten and bitten way too many times; to master the art of stealing from unwatched households; to map all the nice spots Canidale had to offer where pet dogs and their humans would hardly venture. As many stray-borns, he was forced to mature way earlier than what would be considered normal for any sheltered dog.

He never really accepted it.

A single thought followed him from when his mom was still around. Once, and only once, she’d mentioned The Council. At the time, he did not mind that she lacked knowledge regarding it. It was understandable that she simply did not care. She was content with life as it was, she enjoyed her freedom and she never stood too long at the same place, anyway. But Doc, on the other hand, with the little information he had, thought of it as an opportunity to be seen. To bring equality to all stray dogs in Canidale. Except that it was not that simple.

Strays weren’t given a voice because there was no way to fit them into one “faction”. They were self-centered dogs, The Council said, and as self-centered as they were they couldn’t be represented by anyone. Bullshit, right? But whatever argument Doc had to contradict them fell on deaf ears—they had already made up his mind. For a moment he was nothing but disheartened, though that was short-lived, thankfully, and sooner replaced by anger. Before he made sense of it, he was already collecting dogs in the streets.

The Junkyard was a consequence, Doc had never really aimed to become a leader, but if that was the only way stray dogs could be respected then he would be whatever they needed.
