Description Japanese propaganda poster promoting East Asian unity.

Although Japan waged war on China, it claimed it was doing so to restore order in China as China was in civil war facing an unstable corrupt government of Chiang Kai-Shek that was falling apart, warlords, and communist revolution. During World War II Japan claimed the Chiang Kai-Shek government was illegitimate and a puppet of the United States. Japan declared that it was seeking to establish a new economic order in East Asia with an East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere that was opposed by the United States, Britain, and others wishing to retain their power in East Asia.

The characters shown represent Japan (in the centre), China (on the right), and Manchuria (on the left).

Indeed. For Chinese people there is one word that evokes memories of Japanese atrocities during the war: Nanjing.

True. Although the western sort of did want to carve power and territories in the region, the Japanese made themselves look worse than the Western powers.

There are many who view the whole situation on the Pacific front of World War II as just another imperial game, with Japan trying to gain the upper hand while the United States wanted to preserve its interests in the region, including in China.
