I think its even worse than this in some of the games-why would your rivals parents let you rename them in P/D/Platinum unless you were already friends with them? Amnesia perhaps?
This does make a good deal of sense, more so than Oak being senile, because wouldn't he ask you the starting questions EVERY time you talked to him?

I was doing a nuzlocke on Firered.
I had gotten so far without losing a single Pokemon. (4 badges.) I was in Saffron City fighting the Rockets, I believe, when my starter died. Then I was like 'Screw this' and I continued as if it wasn't a nuzlocke.

The first battle in Firered doesn't actually count since even Oak covers for you.....
Plus everybody knows that Charmander is strong in the first battle mainly cuz he just slaps you around since you have no actual moves
