I think this'd go with the novel "Red's Untold Tale", an OUAT novel that both this artist and myself really do enjoy.
In it, Ruby's dealing with some apparent "psychiatric issues", and that's a common element in many a werewolf story: that werewolves are basically lunatics, so hence the crosses of a lunatic lover are what Peter is dealing with, it seems.
Then again, this's my guess of what's going on here.
