The character designs used iin this deviation were those from the pilot episode of Steven Universe, which had a significantly different art style than the series.

Well, yeah, the characters look largely the same from the pilot to the series. The changes were mostly small things, hair styles, accessories, in pearl's case, skin tone. The biggest difference is the art styles, the series' being simpler and more streamlined.

I really miss Garnet and Amethyst. I wonder how Sugilite would have looked. Weird, but the badass fusion besides Garnet herself.

Oh man, I haven't been on here forever!!! But yeah, I didn't know that they changed the designs until recently, I'm ok with them except for pearl. That one upset me the most! I was hoping the show would be like the pilot. Kind of disappointing :/

The design change I'm most disappointed in is Garnet's hair. It's too... square, I guess. But people say that it all looks loads better when in motion, so I'll hold off on any further judgement until I actually see the show.
