Shuten-doji was the king of the oni, and existed during the Heian period in Japan. He and his gang rampaged through Kyoto, marauding and looting until being killed by legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu/Raiko and his four guardian kings.

Shuten-doji was born a human. There are variations of the legend that explain how he changed from boy to demon. A popular version claims he was abandoned by his mother at the age of six, and went on to become a monk. Alcohol was frowned upon in the monk order, and Shuten-doji possessed an insatiable thirst that routinely got him into trouble.

He was much stronger and more cunning than the monks, and began to disdain them. One night, there was a festival at the temple and he arrived drunk. He put on an oni mask and set about frightening the party-goers. When he returned home, he discovered that the mask had fused to his face. Ashamed, he fled into the mountains.

The mountains afforded him solitude, and he began mastering dark and unnatural magics. Other thugs and outcasts were drawn to him, and all
transformed into true oni over time. Hoshikuma-doji, Torakuma-doji, and Kuma-doji all served under his command.
