Although its body shape was similar to that of an eel or a Wels catfish, Orthacanthus was actually a shark that roamed rivers, lakes and swamps, hiding in ambush among the submerged vegetation and capturing prey- perhaps of considerable size- with its curious, bifurcated teeth. At up to 3-4 m long in the largest species, it was one of the most formidable freshwater predators of its time; even so, it was armed with a large, sharp spine, possibly even venomous, to avoid being swallowed by other, larger predators (mostly, other Orthacanthus).

If Dunk thinks this shark is scary, imagine him meeting a Hyneria fish.

"You scared away my dinner, Mammal! Great job" that's what vibes I'm getting from how the Orthacanthus is like

You know looking at this illustration makes me suspect that amphibian thing has just lured poor old Dunk the Diver into a trap - "Goodbye Mammal!" as it were.

"River Shark" has a slightly terrifying ring to it - swans are bad enough, we don't need SHARKS to add to our perils!

Good thing there are no more freshwater sharks today... (are there?)

What's the name of that amphibian by the way?

I have heard of bull sharks, but all I heard of them that they are among the sharks that are dangerous to people... something about them among the sharks that... for a lack of better word; regularly attack people.

I DID never hear about the freshwater bit about them.

The amphibian is a diplocaulus. And yes there’s one shark that lives in the ocean but ventures into freshwater bodies (Bull shark)

There's another kind of freshwater sharks, called Glyphis. They are pretty endangered but still exist. They of course look nothing like Orthacanthus, tho.

Excelente dibujo! la verdad es que orthacantus es muy curioso ya que es muy grande a pesar de ser un tiburón primitivo. El diplocaulus excelente también (Deberias mencionarlo en la descripción ya que no mucha gente lo conoce)

I remember first learning about these animals when watching the prehistory special of River Monsters (though over half the animals it brought up were saltwater fish for some reason). Xenacanthids sure were scary motherfuckers, they look like some hybrid monster from a low-budget Scyfy horror movie: THE EELSHARK!

Indeed I first learned about it when I was like 12 or so, when first accessing the internet. I based this one on the very first picture I saw of one.
