Somewhere in the prehistoric Tibetan plateau, around 5.9 to 4 million years, the prehistoric squirrel Aepyosciurus suspects too late that someone is watching...
Doodle inspired by a study that suggests the fossil cat previously known as Panthera blytheae is not actually Panthera, but a more primitive form that deserves its own genus name, Palaeopanthera. The study also suggests that modern clouded leopards are surviving and specialized palaeopantherines- closely related to Palaeopanthera.
This cat would've been around 20-25 kg, small compared to the big cats that would follow, but a deadly hunter all the same. Its fangs were not as long as those of the modern clouded leopard but it is possible that it was already a very agile climber- its exact proportions are unknown however since only the skull is known.
The cat lived during the Pliocene in the mountains of Asia, probably in both forests and rocky, grassy environments where the marmot-convergent Aepyosciurus would've been one of the potential prey items.
