Yesterday I posted a more traditional reconstruction of a Ptychodus- a benthic shark similar to a giant nurse shark or zebra shark. It turns out there's fossils out there I wasn´t aware of, that show it was actually a pelagic shark. Its strange crushing teeth would've been then not so much to crush giant clam shells, but to prey on ammonites and perhaps even turtles, of which there was a good variety back in the Cretaceous. In this way it would've avoided competing with other sharks and sea reptiles that ate fish and other, softer prey. It would've been completely unlike anything alive today! And lets remember it was one of the largest fish known, at an estimate 10-11 m for the very largest!

Love how Mesozoic sea creatures had to come up with such diverse and almost spontaneous diets just to avoid each other.
