I bought a bundle of old letters and documents at Portobello Road Antiques Market in London on Saturday.

Home and opening up the package to explore the contents, I find - amongst all the other ephemera - a note with my surname ("Orr") in it. The note is dated 1838 and written in Edinburgh (where my ancestors hail from).

Goosebumps.

The photograph is what was called a "cabinet card". It is undated, and there is no information on who the dubious little girl may be, but it is beautifully engraved on the back with the Shacklewell Lane Studio's logo.
