BACKGROUND:
Akihiko's mother had always been sickly. She was so weak that the doctor forbid her from getting pregnant because it would endanger her life. She wanted to give an heir to the Takeshi family so much that she disregarded her doctor's orders. She got pregnant. Just two months into her pregnancy, her body weakened so much that she had to be hospitalized. Her husband, who was only an office worker from a small company, struggled in paying the hospital bills that kept increasing. He was a foreigner, he came to Japan to try his luck, but apparently the Goddess of Fortune didn't favor him. He borrowed money from the yakuza to pay the hospital bills. Finally, five months being bed-ridden, the baby was due. Akihiko's mother had complications and massive bleeding while giving birth, the doctors present had to make a decision: whether to save the mother or the baby. They chose the latter.

With a fragile baby in his hands, Akihiko's father was told of the grieving news. He wept that night, he was full of grief and hatred. Hatred for the baby in his hands, the baby that caused his love's death. Without much thought, he ran to his mother in law's house and gave the baby to the elderly woman. "He's your grandson, take care of him." That was his last words. Akihiko's father disappeared, leaving grandma Kiku a newborn baby and a ton of debts to pay to the yakuza.

Grandma Kiku raised the boy like her own. She tried her best to pay the debts with what little profit she made from her small snack shop. After Akihiko came of age, the yakuza's boss took him as an errand boy. Akihiko would tag along with them to collect debts. He got into fights and became better at it, until he became a force not to be played with. Years later, Akihiko graduated from high school and entered college. Around this time, he realized that he couldn't continue to live this way, as the yakuza's puppet. He gathered his courage and asked the boss to let him go. He promised to pay his debts, eventually. The boss was very fond of Akihiko, he didn't want to let the boy go. But after seeing Akihiko's determined eyes (and a bunch of beatings for Akihiko), the boss agreed to release the boy. It was his opportunity to live a honest life at last.

Even after leaving the yakuza, life didn't improve for Akihiko. Nobody wanted to be his friends because they were either too scared of him or he was too poor for them. He was always alone, in and out of college. One day on his way home, he came across Doki Doki Honey. Intoxicated by the smell of delicious coffee, he entered the cafe. He thought it was a little strange that all the employees were male, but he didn't pay it much thought. Satisfied with the coffee and friendly atmosphere, he exited the cafe only to notice a paper that said the cafe was hiring. He felt very comfortable in the cafe that he didn't think twice to apply. This could be a brand new start for him.
