OMG, this is the sexiest Eric ever looked! That look of coldblooded pride on his face and the way those powerful arms bulge out, he must have DESTROYED Ursula with his strength alone. Boy, I would love to see more of this! (I also love your Comicbook Gaston!)

She's not a "huge tentacled squid thing", she's a cecaelia.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hollano In reply to EVAUnit4A [2010-09-06 18:13:28 +0000 UTC]

First off, lol at your disclaimer I love it
Secondly, that article says about two paragraphs in that Ursula and her ilk are not 'consistently named' which to me suggests it's not an official or universally accepted classification.
Plus, anyone can post any load of bollocks on Wikipedia. So, alas, though I love the fact you've posted and pointed this out to me (and I incidentally found the link very interesting as I had no idea that these creatures existed in any form of literature/art/mythology other than The Little Mermaid - never felt the need to question it really) my initial description of 'huge tentacled squid beast thing' will remain.
BUT I shall further investigate this issue and definitely concede if I find further evidence.
*it also helps me to see it less as murder that Eric destroyed a squidbeast rather than a creature with a real name. Also, she's supposedly based on the Nordic Kraken, which was DEFINITELY a squidbeast. Heh. I could talk for hours about this kinda stuff.

EVAUnit4A In reply to hollano [2010-09-06 21:17:07 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't murder, it was self-defense. Eric was defending both his kingdom and his love.

I created that Wiki article... I'm glad you looked it up!

I wrote that whole section about Ursula not being named consistently, and it's true. Cecaelia are frequently called "sea witch" because Ursula is the most-prominently-seen example in pop culture. That does not mean that ALL human/octopus-hybrids are witches or magical. Additionally, WDP never came up with a proper name for her species because they didn't need to; we never saw any others of her kind in the film [or the TV series].
TLM on Broadway used the pre-film concept that Triton changed Ursula into a cecaelia as part of her punishment- kinda like the Scarlett Letter- hence she was a unique creature and would need no name for her species. However, even though this came from pre-production for the film, in canon the debate is open as to if she is unique or just an isolated member of her species. Yes, she was named "Octopian" once in the series, but that may have been a writing fluke; certainly the term "cecaelia" was not around in the 90s for them to use!

I, and the good mer-philes at the Seatails Discussion Board, came up with the term cecaelia years ago in response to the question, 'What is the name of Ursula's species?'.
What you don't see in the current incarnation of the Wiki article is the explanation that was given as to how the naming came up- the Wiki nazis came in and denied the justification of the naming... hence my footer rant .

I could go on-and-on about all the things I posted, how they came to be named, all the references I used, , but I won't here...

Hahahaaha! Hilarity!!!
Love it ...actually I've always thought Ursula was a reference to the Cracon (I have no idea how to spell that) ..do you know what I'm talking about? - the one in Pirates of the Carribean ..sort of the beast of the seas - and that last scene where she/her tentacles take down a ship when she dies = exactly like the legend.
In any case, brilliant concept - I've never seen anything like it before - and I enjoyed it very much
xx

Yeh, I can see what you mean with thw Kraken (I think that's how it's spellt). She is a pretty enormous seamonster at the end. I always thought the skeleton of the seamonster she lived in could've been the Kraken too.
Glad you like the pic

Life-is In reply to hollano [2010-05-02 12:30:02 +0000 UTC]

Aahhhh. There's an idea!! I always thought it was a sea dragon and never really understood why disney would take such a harmless and beautiful "good" creature and use it to portray the "evil" dwelling. Although I don't think I've ever heard of a sea dragon that's that big before so..your idea's probably more plausible ..and intriguing... I wonder if there are any other possibly mythical evil sea creatures and legends about them that Disney could have used as an intertext for that dwelling. - Sounds like an extra curricular project that's extensive and possibly fruitless coming on! haha
I love getting new ideas about Disney's possible intertexts. : ) In any case, you definitely did justice to (my husband) Eric
