Description (View Full, or download, it's a large file)

All finished! Although I gotta say, the scanner and camera really does NOT do this justice. The image on the top is the scanned version, and the one on the bottom was taken by my camera, to show the shininess of the gold leaf

This was done on a 6x6" parchment-coloured paper. If you check out my scraps (or SCA folder), have the illumination-only scan, and a photo of it with the calligraphy and gold. I managed to paint most of this at an SCA demo this past Saturday, and I finished it up today. I also fixed the "e" in "we"...if you check out the calligraphied version, it was a blotch...I had to mix some paints to get the same colour of the parchment and fix it up to make it look like an "e" again.

Overall, I'm really happy at how this turned out I only wish it would've scanned/photoed like how you see it in person. Ah well.

The illumination is based from this manuscript: [link]

6x6" acid-free faux parchment, Higgins Black Magic Ink, 23k Gold Leaf, Winsor & Newton gouache.

Gilded and calligraphied; sans paint: [link]

Thank you! *nods* It took a little bit to get the hang of illumination, gilding being the tricky part of it, and there's still much more for me to learn, but I've been loving every minute of it

VERY beautiful work, Hollyann!

Ya'know what I always wonder, why so many versions of the Lord's prayer always leave off the end of the prayer that says "For thine is the power and the honor and the glory, forever"

*nods* I grew up with saying the Lord's Prayer as it's written there, I'd never even heard of the last part till I moved to Vermont and went to a non-Roman Catholic church Even now, I find it's weird when I say the last part, cuz I'm just so used to saying it without it O.o

Ah, I see. ;3
Here's a link to the prayer with the ending like I told you about. <:3

The sample video with it is very nice. <:.3

We should always remember to give total glory and honor to God in all we do, my fellow Sister. <:3

Oh, I know the ending part of it now After going to a Methodist church long enough, I finally memorized it too, I just need to get into the habit of saying it at the end now

I like the bottom image the best; though it's a little darker I think the camera picked up the "shine-back" in the gold leaf well enough. It gives more of an "antiqued" look... like something I might've seen placed in marble at a church. Very beautiful.

You're getting very very good at these! I imagine it must be very beautiful irl, with the shimmering gold and everything.

*nods* It definately looks nicer in person, especially since the scanner and photo didn't really catch the colours very well >.<

When I brought it to the demo, one of the ladies there had no idea how small it was

Nice work with the gold leaf! The type is a little rough starting out, but it gets much cleaner about halfway through.

By the way, since this is in your SCA folder, would that be, by any chance, the Society for Creative Anachronism? If so, what kingdom are you from?

*nods* I'm a little new at calligraphy, but I think I know what to do the next time I do it...primarily by putting in penciled lines so I can at least keep it straight!

Yup, I'm in the SCA I'm in the East Kingdom

Wow... from the scan I couldn't even tell that it was coloured by hand!

I'm curious though... (and feel free not to answer) based on the text, are you Roman Catholic?

hollyann In reply to Sienna-Maiu [2009-04-06 02:22:24 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I was born and baptised Roman Catholic

Sienna-Maiu In reply to hollyann [2009-04-06 02:26:59 +0000 UTC]

I can tell because I've heard that the Roman Catholics cut off the ending Just a warning my mom gave me incase I ever went to my friends church for a service so that I wouldn't keep going on with the rest.

Also, is that a Roman Catholic thing or a typo where you've said "forgive us who tresspasses", rather than "forgive us our tresspasses"?

Yeah I never even knew there was ending part to the prayer "For thine is the kingdom, and power, and glory, for now and ever and ever". Never heard of it until I went to a Methodist church and I was all "...but we're done...why are you saying more?"

There's different versions of the Our Father, this is the one I grew up saying I can't remember what the link is now, but I even looked up the different other variations of the prayer, some of it is just mind-boggling different!
