Description
Someone in the previous comments suggested I make a poc centaurette to make up for the lack of color in the original group. At some point in the movie there was a little black centaur, but the way she was portrayed was very racist (and I think she was edited out later on for that very reason). My starting point was her design, but somewhere along the line I erred away from it Hope you like her !

Yeah Sunflower and Otika where edited out due to racism but they left the mix girls who where black and white (literally zebras). I think your portrayal of her is beautiful and her hair looks awesome all natural XD and the giant sunflowers look good too. Kind of want to see her with a high fashion look and doves in her hair like that one centaurette. Would love to see some zebras girls by you too.

She's beautiful.

I wish the artists for the film would have designed Sunflower more like this and that she was seen getting dressed up with the help of the cherubs like the other centaurettes.

I love your portrayal of her so much.  The pastoral scene made Fantasia my favorite Disney as a little girl growing up.  I saw it back in the late 80's/early 90's when rereleased in theatres.  We didn't have internet back then.  As an adult, I was so sad to see the racist portrayal in such a beautiful animated Disney movie.  I love it when people make nice fanart of Sunflower.  I am glad that it is edited out, but I completely see why people are upset with it, and it upsets me a lot too.  I'm a huge Disney fan, but I am not always happy with things that happened back then.  It is good that we can grow and learn from past mistakes.

It's weird how Sunflower was portrayed as a pickaninny but the zebra centaurettes who hung around with Bacchus weren't particularly offensive looking.

I love the zebra centaurettes.  I was so upset when I discovered Sunflower.  I'm glad it's edited out, but it still saddens me to know that it existed in the original release.

GuzzGutsy In reply to HollyBell [2017-02-23 22:29:26 +0000 UTC]

The movie was directed at adult audiences, and it was 1940, a still very troublesome time for racial and ethnic relations all over the world caused by WWII, i'm black, but TBH, i won't crucify Disney for that, it was the humor of the time, and many black people also found humor in those jokes, so, eh, i still think they should do what Warner Brothers did and own up and not try to hide or censor what they've done, and that still was other animators work and they didn't have the right to censor it, they could have done a version with non-stereotyped black centaurs that aren't serving others, as it would balance out the damage done before in my opinion.

On the one hand, I completely agree with you that they should own up to the past.  But I prefer having the edited version myself.  I love the pastoral scene, and it upsets me so much that this was a part of it.  Maybe release a special feature about it or something on the next release?  I grew up with the edited version having no idea Sunflower existed.  I like that a lot of artists are giving her a more beautiful portrayal now.  Would love to discuss this more with you.  I'm intrigued by your perspective on this.

I recall besides Sunflower--the little centaur who was helping out the lady centaurs with their grooming there were some gorgeous zebra centaurs who served Bacchus during that segment--they were designed well unlike Sunflower. There's also a second little centaur called Otika who rolls out the red carpet for Bacchus.

Anyhow, this centaur is gorgeous and I love her.

Sunflower was very much a caricature even in the 1940's. You can see similar looks in the "Our Gang" series and other films of that era. She wouldn't stand a chance in today's PC world. The same reason that Song of the South appears destined to gather dust in the Disney archives. You can still find clips with her polishing the hooves and acting as a lady maid to some of the other centaurettes on YouTube.

The public has been somewhat kinder to her two less caricatured sisters seen with the drunken god, Dionysus (Greek god of party boys).vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/d… vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/d…

All 3 are still acknowledged by Disney and can be found with minimal searching.

Technically you've aged her up as she was intended to be the equivalent of a young child / maid helping the others get ready for their date ala the Antebellum era of the South.

Wow.  Interesting how it got covered up - it's an interesting arguement, though, one that remains to be discussed.  In how that art, as a representation of the time in which it was made, is later altered to reflect better attitudes in subsequent years when that culture has realized what it did wrong.

(I think that made sense.  Thanks for sharing these, even though officially, they do not exist.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jkrolak In reply to Agent505 [2017-02-21 05:44:41 +0000 UTC]

Well the two zebra centaurettes still are canon.

Alas, poor Sunflower deserved a kinder fate.

It's not so much that what they did was wrong, any more than propaganda films during WWII from Disney and Warner Brothers were wrong. But they no longer reflect the attitudes of later generations. And too many people would try to generalize that as the whole current company view rather than realize it was a product of the times. But should you ask a WWII veteran, you may be "shocked" to learn that they may still have strong feelings that match those old portrayals of Japanese and German stereotypes.

Like many things, a joke isn't funny when you're the target.

Agreed, it's scary to know what happened 75 years ago in this country and worry that it could happen again if the head idiot's foriegn policies and anti-Muslim politics continue.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jkrolak In reply to Agent505 [2017-02-21 23:32:44 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately most of those "Muslim" countries are acting much like Japan did in the 1930's and 40's as well. And unlike the Nisei of that era, many American Muslims and refugees are not going out of their way to show how misplaced such distrust would be. While they definitely all do not support the violence, they appear to tolerate it by their silence or worse trying to rationalize or excuse for it. Much like during WWI a few of those of Central powers descent (Germany and its allies) did commit sabotage and actively try to rationalize any action those countries took. To be fair save for the sabotage, the Allied countries were also active (and ultimately more effective)  in the US on the propaganda front.

There are also lots of historical incidents showing that such "round ups" don't work.  US has banned legal immigration from certain countries for a variety of reasons, working (Irish, Chinese), war (Germany, Japan), crime (Italy) and others. Usually not for long, and more often than not, it did not accomplish any meaningful nor effective objective beyond short term political headlines.

But DA is not the place to argue a complex issue.

Her name is Sunflower.

You can still find out more about her on the Disney Wiki page. She was intended to be an accepted caricature in the 1940's of a young black girl who was growing an afro hairstyle and a foal's body as she was supposed to be younger than the others. In it's day, cute. Not so much anymore.
