Goliathus orientalis. Described in 1909.
A species of goliath beetle found in Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This beetle grows to about 2 to 2.6 inches for the females, and 2 to 4 inches for the males. The goliath genus holds species that are considered the world’s largest insect by mass. Tree sap and fruit are the staples of this beetle’s diet. G. orientalis can live for up to a year in captivity, but it’s estimated to have a much shorter lifespan in the wild.
The black patterning on the pronotum and elytra can vary greatly in the two subspecies: G. orientalis meleagris and G. orientalis orientalis.
