Description I am the Keeper of the Stars.
Each night I wake,
To light the fires of the sky,
And each morning I snuff them out.
The Heavens spiral above my head,
As I count each pin-prick of light,
To make sure I haven’t forgotten to light one.
And when my counting is done,
I sit upon a small wooden chair,
And contemplate the darkness.
For this is what really interests me.
I know all about the stars,
But nothing of what lies beyond,
Their tendrils of light.
Days and nights pass by,
Too quickly for me to notice,
Though I remember my obligations,
And keep the stars lit at night,
And dark during the day.
One night as I stared at the world above,
A star fell from the sky,
And crashed down near me.
I wasn’t surprised,
As this had happened before.
With my foot I reached out,
And touched the burning sphere.
It felt cool,
And its light seemed to beckon me closer.
I stepped forward,
And the light surrounded me.
I was inside the sphere,
Which rose from the ground,
And into the sky,
Taking me off to explore,
The spaces between the stars.
