The background has a nice smokey look. I also think that the texture of the scales are great.

YAY! I like it when people are drawn to my characters' eyes! It's like one of my main goals when drawing.

Thanks! I had been both looking forward to and dreading working on it. I think I found a good brush to do "Stars" with...

Are you having a lighting war? Good job on the scales.

Yes. First night-lighting, and now orange lighting. Did I do well do you think? He's supposed to be a purply-black dragon with silver scales speckling the underside of his wings ("like a stary night sky"), lit up by orange lavalight.

It's pretty good, though maybe a bit more shading under the wings would help. It's a rather complicated one to do. My advice is to remember where your light source is.
Oh, and maybe a bit more detail with the ground he's standing on.

*changes things* Hows this?
I'm thinking he's lit up by a lavafall to his left. Maybe a tiiiiiiny bit of natural light from his right?
Yeah, I noticed that it kind of had the "clone" pattern still. I used the smudge tool on it and the wall to make sure it didn't look too much like I used a pattern filler on it. (Can't believe I didn't think of that before..)

It might look a bit better.
Another trick I've found is to shade the ground using the same colors, or similar ones, to what you use on the characters.

I'm happier with it now. Among other things he just looked too purple to me so I desaturated him a bit.
Well... there's plenty of black in the background. The problem is I want people to be able to see my dragon here, and if I make the background too dark, like him, they won't be able to.

You could add some highlights to the ground, just something so it's easier to tell what the surroundings look like.

Does that mean that highlights wouldn't be a good idea for this one, or would they still be a good idea? (I'm bad at lighting "real-life" backgrounds because I hardly ever do them...)

I'd add some highlights to the ground, like drawing rocks and such, just enough it looks like ground and not a stock background. You can see here how I've done it. Just a little highlighting and darkening helps add depth to the background that is as close to the viewer as where the character is standing. (Far away stuff can be blurrier, like in the picture of Melsha.) If you lighten the non-dragon stuff, you could also have it casting a shadow, which would enforce where it's standing on the landscape.
