Description Inspired by this -> [link]

I've tried writing several descriptions for this, and none of them seemed to fit. I just...I feel like for someone who has so many things that isolate him from others (his homosexuality, his atheism, his autism, etc.), to have something that is crafted towards them, like a simple bedtime story, is the best thing in the world.
It's even better when the subject is not made the focus of the story but is just casual and natural.

Also, on a sidenote, R.J.'s parents (and R.J. himself) sort've guessed that he was gay, and both Marion and Richard coaxed R.J. into being okay with it (since because of his autism R.J. had a really hard time adjusting to all his differences and how society could take them).
Also, since R.J. takes so much after Marion in personality and intelligence (in fact it's probably her side of the family that gave him his autism), Marion finds it surprising that he as Richard's taste in romantic partners (as both father and son go crazy for gingers).

Anyway, just a little somethin'-somethin' I wanted to get out.

I love this little short comics of yours. It seems R.J. knew pretty soon that he's gay.

I'm not going to begin to say that homosexuality should be quashed, and I am fully in support of that part, but as someone with an autism-spectrum disorder myself I definitely don't think it's a good idea as a parent to say "He's different, let's just leave it at that and accept it." At that point you may as well say "He's not very good at school, but that's alright because that's just how he is." Then it's a very slippery slope to saying "He's not good at this thing, but he doesn't have to be."

I was never treated any different from any of my siblings, and I like to think I ended up better for it. I don't accept any flaws as "just the way I am," and I constantly try to improve every part of me whenever possible.

I'm going to reiterate that this comment has nothing to do with his sexuality. That's neither something that can be fixed, nor a flaw in the first place. Atheism is, but I understand the kind of struggle that can be. I'm not going to start that debate, though.

I think you're missing the entire point of this.
I didn't make this comic to suggest that all differences should just be accepted and not challenged (because if the drawbacks of my autism were just accepted and not challenged I would NOT be the person I am today), I made this comic to show that not EVERYTHING has to be standardized.
R.J. is made to adapt in numerous ways to "normal" society, and in a lot of ways he treated like a normal child. His autism makes it so that sometimes a different route has to be taken to correct his behavior, but he is still not allowed to get away with things unless it is an actual problem.

However, sometimes it's nice when you're acknowlegded as being different and treated as such. For example, imagine if you were in an interracial relationship, but all you saw on TV was same race or more likely white couples. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see an interracial couple featured? And not even as the main focus or conflict, but just as a casual feature on the side?

THAT's what I'm trying to express here, an equal exchange. Though people like R.J. and I, with Asperger's, have to adapt to everyone else's standards daily, it's nice to be acknowlegded as different or as not being able to do some things as well and needing a different route to get things done.
I never said that you should use autism, homosexuality, or even atheism as an excuse to justify certain behaviors.
What I'm saying is that sometimes (depending on the situation and behavior in question) it's nice to remember that people are not all the same and would like to acknowledged for their differences.

Plus, atheism isn't a flaw. It's a belief just like everything else and it should be respected.

MrBoltzmann In reply to HoneydewSapphic [2012-12-25 20:45:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for clearing that up. I was only complaining on the assumption that that was what you were going for, and now that there's confirmation that it wasn't it's become a nonissue.

And not to prolong this argument any more than it should be, but accepting that things are different is part of recognizing someone as an individual, and part of human dignity. In my eyes, there should be no special treatment for someone diagnosed with Asperger's (more severe cases excepted). If they're a little quirky, there's nothing wrong with that, but if they've got emotional problems or some such then that's a problem that should be faced, whether they are neurotypical or not.

I do respect atheism as a belief, it's just my belief that it is incorrect and therefore flawed. Just like it may be an atheist's belief that mine is incorrect and thus I'm ignorant.

(Once again, not to try to start this discussion, but I think hard atheism is a fallacy; one cannot prove a negative, so to be convinced there is no God is to assume knowledge that you don't have, which is as much a faith as religion. Even when I wasn't Christian, I was agnostic)
