Are you familiar with amigurumi patterns? 6sc in a ring, working in rounds 2 sc in first sc, sc in next, etc until it's as wide as you want.
Work even until it looks the right length and decrease. They're just pill shapes with i-cord arms and legs. The rest is fudged.

If it helps, how I change colors is to sl st in the last 10 or so sc before the color change. Finish off and join the new color to any sc. Sl st the first ten or so stitches and carry on with the rounds.

I wish I could actually write a pattern! Sorry, I hope it helps a little.
