Description
Over Tatabánya, a miners' town in Hungary, Europe, there is a limestone hill, called Kő-hegy (Stone Hill), with a huge cavern
that yawns to the plains below. Its enormous opening is visible from quite a distance and the M1 motorway from the West runs
toward it in a long run. The hill has another features that crown it as landmarks: a steel shaft tower of a former coal mine
and the most prominent: the Turul, largest bird statue of Europe, to remind all the glory and myths of Hungary. The cave has
many stories about the people of surrounding villages hiding from the turk armies in the XVI century; hidden treasures of a
famous "betyár" (highwayman) of the early XIX century; paleolitic remnants of horrible monsters and many others. The cave is
accessible for all now, through a well maintained paved road and a comfortable trail from the parking lot. Worths a visit!
This is a heavily fine-tuned view from the "window" of the cave. The windy plains west from Tatabánya towards Komárom and Győr are good for the wind turbine plants. The next 50km (30 miles) on the motorway landmarked with the tall structures—I guess this may be the biggest turbine plant in Hungary. The fragile looking giants are unbelievably huge—just compare to the houses around them!
Unfortunately I cannot tell you a tale about the Selim Cave and those White Titans who are gathering on the Western horizon, though it could be a good plot... but too fresh.
Nevertheless, the end of the coal-fuelled power plants and the rise of the wind turbines made the area way cleaner. Tatabánya has an extending limestone and sandstone quarry business, too, with a cement factory and the fine cement dust and the coal powered plants were quite bad in the past. I still remember the bitter smell of the brown coal and lignite (black coal is very rare in Hungary) and I am happy to not smell it today...
