Description A lot of time went into this one... 3D modeling/texturing/rendering, then PS compositing, further painting and all that really took a lot of time. Plus the huge resolution didn't "help" at all, my old PC could barely handle it at just 1GB of RAM and 2GHz AMD processor.

This image was done in March 2006, with some minor touch-ups in 2012.

Original resolution: 7000x7581

Tech info:

-Lightwave 3D 8 for pretty much everything (planets, machinery, house, wooden bridges etc.)
-Vue 5 Infinite for additional palms and background
-Photoshop CS2 for post
-stock used for bottom engines and pylons

-----------------UNBELIEVABLE!!!-----------------
I can't believe I got a Daily Deviation...just like that. It's something that I did not expect to happen until much later, when my work would be better. I see everyday amazing DDs from very talented artists and, to be honest, I thought the road to a DD was much longer. Now what can I say? ....WOOOOHOHOHOHOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! There, that should do it
My big thanks to for suggesting it and to for featuring it!!

if you mean what the picture is for, it's just a personal piece. if you mean what all the machinery is for...i've no idea.

Have no idea what's going on, but when a scene looks this cool, who cares? Really interesting mix here, a whole bunch of time zones from raw nature, to modern and even futuristic constructions, and the lighting and overall shape of the landmass is really cool too, kinda has a goth feel ( not that I'm into that stuff, but it sometimes yeilds cool effects )

WOW 200+ layers. how long did this take?

anyway, i love the crouded, crammed togetherness of this place. it just seems amazing how something could look so realistic yet so severly unreal...

that probably didn't make any sence but it did it my head... lolz

hi. thanks for your appreciation, i'm glad you like this one. to answer your question...it took a LOT of time. several hundred hours, I really don't know. it could've taken less, but at the time I first made it (I operated a big "facelift" on it recently), I didn't have a very good knowledge of the applications I was using.
thank you for passing by.

This amazing! Proportion, modling, shading, atmosphere, mood, it's all there!

My only two questions is was this some kind of project or did you just felt like making a tribute to the Myst series? And is this based on an actual Age or did you just felt like making one of your own?

Horhew In reply to BackgroundBailey [2007-09-02 17:49:00 +0000 UTC]

hi. the answer is quite simple: I am a die-hard fan of the Myst series and of adventure games in general (I used to be an adventure freak actually, there were times, years ago, when I used to spend whole days playing and solving and, if you believe it, filling entire sketchbooks with solustions, sketches of all the machinery and landscapes, own ideas and countless adventure-related stuff). Thus, being for many years in such an adventure-rich environment, all these games had their influence, more or less, on my artistic taste. Myst had its share of influence, but not in such a way as to determine me to make "more of that".
This image (Qanesia), had, surprisingly, nothing to do with Myst. It has that myst-ish mechanical feel to it, but it's not really going in the same direction. I made the sketch for it in the Botanical Garden, while looking at some odd trees while asking myself "How would it be if those trees were metallic?" That's the long story short. Btw, I have an "image-walkthrough"about Qanesia in my gallery (explaining creation processes and stuff). You should check it out if you want to know more about it.
One of the more powerful influences in this image had Oddworld's Abe's Exoddus with it's "age" (so to say) Necrum (it's the jungle, the 2nd one).
that's it..phew, haven't written such a long comment reply in ages. anyway, was my pleasure. have a nice day

A wonderful piece which reminds me of Odd World too. This could be an artifact of having to shrink the image down so much from your original, but the cliffs on the left side seem a bit too dark so you don't see all of the wonderful detail. The storage tank in the lower right hand corner seems out of focus too. It'd be nice to see a little more detail on the intermediate plateaus and perhaps vary their over all shape a bit especially on the left side of the picture. These all all very minor issues though. Any chance we'll be able to purchase a poster sized version of this piece printed from your full sized file? It would look even better, I suspect, viewed in feet rather than inches on the screen.

oh, and the "power cylinder" that seems out of focus was meant that way

hi. i'm very glad you appreciate my work.
yes, i thought about all those small issues, but i didn't have any more patience to fix them -you can imagine, after 3 months spent "in the making"...
about the prints...I think i will most probably get a prints account here on DA after mid-August, I promise I'll let you know when I do.
that's about all. thanks for visiting and have a nice day.
