This is a portrait of Laurel, an artist who's works have finally got me out of my comfort zone of drawing faces and try my hand at figure drawing. There's a photo of hers where's she's striking a contortionist pose that I knew I wanted to draw soon as I saw it!
It's amazing how your mind tries to bargain, criticize or procrastinate when you try something new. I chose to hear it out and then decided to do what I set out to anyway. I did bargain with my mind and draw laurel's portrait on the side too and it really does add to the overall artwork.
One of Laurel's favourite bands is 3teeth, a name inspired by a trident, so I included that in the composition as an Easter egg. One of her favourite genres of music is industrial metal, so I got listening to a bit of it while drawing this and that explains the lettering style that captures her vibe and musical taste pretty well.
Laurel is an artist who draws traditional, stylised portraits of her friends, favourite followers and musicians. I admire that, using your art to make someone's day. So I really hope this makes her day too!
