Description HORRORSHOW #1 - INSIDE THE NARCOTIC-RAVAGED PSYCHOSIS OF A MANIC-DEPRESSIVE MALCONTENT, A SELF-PORTRAIT

"There is no Sanity Clause"

(13th Jan 09 - 7th March 09)

Media - pen
Size - A3

Returning to the idea of the Acid Horrorshow from 2007 [link] , I begun work on Horrorshow #1 three days after finishing Home Detention Curfew. During my time on Home Detention Curfew I had worked on several sketches in preparation for Horrorshow #1 as I planned to expand the idea from the Acid Horrorshow into an A3 size poster to appeal to drug users, particularly users of hallucinagenics. Horrorshow #1 was to become a key piece in my artistic development and is also a self portrait of sorts, exploring my personality and mind-set.
I began with the image of myself smoking a joint underneath a magnifying glass, which was to represent my feeling of being constantly scrutinised and the paranoia brought on by my time in prison, on Home Detention Curfew and probation. The image of me was drawn from a photograph from a New Year's Eve party from a couple of years earlier. I also included two large eyes within the piece as another representation of my paranoia.
Horrorshow #1 contains several drugs references and I have used several images that symbolise fear, anger and madness, for instance, Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight and the scarecrow to the bottom right of the drawing.
Toward the top left of the piece is a drawing of my ex-girlfriend Zoe, which I also took from a photograph. Although we had officially broken up in November 2008, I had served my Home Detention Curfew at Zoe's house and we were still sleeping together. It was during the creation of Horrorshow #1 that it was revealed to me that Zoe had been cheating on me during my time in prison with Mike Emanuel, who was supposed to be a friend of mine and had given me Chlamydia.
Also within Horrorshow #1 are several patterns and images inspired by the Acid Horrorshow of 2007 along with several new patterns. The disposable Horrorshow cigarette lighter was included and would become a key part of the Horrorshow series. I inserted several quotations including "there is no Sanity Clause", said by the Joker in a Batman comic. I was to discover later that it was actually a Marx brothers quote. I also included 24 words beginning with 'Mal' that have a negative meaning, as in the Oxford English dictionary.

mal - combining form. bad or badly; wrong or wrongly.

I'm very much impressed by how this flows together: there's SO much stuff in it, and yet it's not overwhelming and it all seems to fit together in the picture. And, of course, I'm loving the dark//horror theme :3 Exceptional work!
