I'm also amazed by the realism, mine aren't even close. I'm still struggling with proportions. I found some good books, though, so I'm practising!

Proportions are not my strong point either. Take most of my horses out of their drawings and make them into real horses and I'm sure they would struggle to stand haha! I wouldn't get too hung up on confromation, it's really nitty gritty stuff that comes later with lots of practise

The shine isn't hard to get, just use very sharply contrasting colours (so on this one, dark browns/blacks with light grey/blue). As for realism...just loads of pratise
