Description
Literature Entry:
The air was brisk. Black and blue took over where pinks and oranges had just been. The smell of snow filled in where the sun had been not thirty minutes ago. The wind pulled clouds over the show grounds and soon enough, snow began to fall. Just as the last trailer rolled in, the snow picked up, muffling the sounds made from the different teams and their horses. The bare trees soon gained their snow blankets, giving them a post-holiday wonderland look. There were steam puffs showing up as the horses lined up, getting ready for their classes. Each one stood out, beautiful in their own way. Near the back of the grounds, where the last trailer had pulled in, a charcoal stallion stood alone. His dual horns gleamed golden from the lights from the other trailers and arena close by, and twinkled with a slight orange as he turned his head to look at the small young woman coming from the trailer.
“Okay, everything will be fine… Yeah…” she mumbled to herself, patting the stallion’s neck as she passed him.
The brunette ducked into the tack room and pulled out a tinkling silver grey halter. Finding a grey halter was enough, but finding the perfect silver ribbon to go with it had been another challenge. Hand painting the bells, now orange and golden, and sewing each one on had taken a long week. Her tan hands were still recovering from the pin pricks and scrapes she had gotten while attaching everything.
The stallion gave a low nicker as the she appeared again, looking at her with two-toned orange and yellow eyes. He stomped a hoof as he became impatient.
“I know, Fury,” she own green eyes looked at him as she spoke softly. She slipped the halter over his face, petting his nose in between hooking the buckles. Taking a step back, Kheela thought he looked magnificent. The colors on the halter matched his horns and eyes perfectly, catching the light just right so his horns and the bells almost glowed.
“Now for your wings,” she rushed back into the trailer. Pushing the brushes aside, she pulled out two leather strips that had half moon clasps along them. Again, they had been painted silver with gold ribbon glued on top, gold and orange bells sewed on. Kheela brought them next to the big stallion, setting them down to stretch Night Fury’s wings out. His wings stretched twice the length of him, and putting decorations on them had been more of a spur of the moment for the young handler. The strips “clipped” over the outside edge of his wings, just hugging the wings enough that they didn’t slide off.
Stepping away again, a smile broke over her face. He looked like a modern reindeer with the bells tinkling. Arching his neck and stretching both wings out, he looked like a creature from a fairy-tale Kheela had been told when she was a little girl. With it being a holiday show, Kheela was hoping to add some unique-ness to her entry. Not being with a barn made this harder anyway. She didn’t have a team to groom the big stallion, or polish the tack before the show for her. Because of this, she knew every part of the tack and horse like the back of her hand.
Kheela pulled a few peppermints out from her pocket, and Night Fury’s eyes widened as he snorted in anticipation. She laughed lightly before handing the treats to him, rubbing his face as he crunched away. “You’ve been so good today, bud. Hopefully you’ll be good the rest of the night, too,” she talked to him as she put away the rest of the brushes and sprays back into the trailer.
Now that the stallion was set, she needed to change. Kheela had worked on the stallion’s get up more than her’s, but she thought it still looked pretty good for some last minute coordination. Her jacket was the same color scheme as the stallion’s tack, but she just had her normal tan breeches and black tall boots to finish her outfit.
Looking at the mirror, she had a small feeling of worry. This was her first show. Ever. She knew that halter classes were all about the horse: conformation, attitude, striding on how they carried themselves. Would the extra’s be too much? Would they even let her in the arena? Her stomach fluttered with doubt for a split second before she heard Night Fury neigh from outside. “Coming, Fury!” she scrambled to grab the grey lead rope before dashing outside.
“OHHHHHH!! That’s c-c-c-cold!!” she shivered as soon as she walked out. “I should have b-b-brought my insulted boo-o-o-o-oots…” she grumbled to herself. Jogging in place for a moment and shaking her hands, “Okay, bud, let’s take a short walk before the classes start.” She unclipped him from the trailer and walked him around the outskirts of the grounds. Kheela caught glances of the other unicorns around, each one brightly colored, None of the others were black like the one she was leading. The stallion had also taken notice of the other unicorns around. He snorted and arched his neck as he saw multiple mares, each being doted upon before their classes.
“No, Fury,” Kheela scolded him as she gently shook the lead rope, rubbing the chain under his chin against him. She could see him deflate slightly as he knew that he could not make some new “relationships”. She laughed lightly again, pulling him away from the rest of the horses and walked him to the arena.
The snow crunched under her boots, her toes getting cold. Still falling steadily, it made her hair damp as they neared the arena. With each step, her stomach fluttered again, making her feel sick. What if this? What if that? Her own breath started to come out faster. Night Fury brushed his nose against her shoulder, puffing against her cheek. Kheela turned and pulled his cheek next to her face. Sighing, her breath mixed with his.
The announcer called for the halter class. Kheela took a deep breath and looked at the taller stallion next to her. She could have sworn his eyes glimmered with confidence right before they walked into the arena.
