There are many approaches to the craft. You can carry a Holga and get to know it and use it intuitively in lieu of the mechanics....does that make you less of an atrtist?
If a painter uses certain brushes simply because they "feel" right withouot knowledge of their manufacture or source of materials...does it make her less of a painter?
