.005. Seeking Solace- Brothers

He didn't quite fit in the cabinet, so the door rattled when he pulled it shut.

Latvia clutched a small teddy bear to his chest and whimpered. He was wearing his pyjamas—a white long-sleeved shirt and pants with rainbow polka dots on them. Sealand had given the pyjamas to him for his birthday.

Estonia was off at his house for some political nonsense, and Russia had called Lithuania into his chambers in the way that Latvian knew there would be those odd sounds issuing from within, and the next morning Lithuania would have a sore lower back. Latvia didn't like those noises, but usually his teddy bear and Estonia's whispered words of comfort were enough to quell his fears. But tonight Estonia was gone and the noises seemed louder than usual, sending the small Latvian scurrying from his bedroom in an effort to find a small cranny that he could fit himself, his teddy bear, and the warm blanket Ms. Ukraine had given him into.

Russia's house was huge, and you could get lost during the day quite easily. But in the night, in the dark, things threw odd, mysterious shadows, and the house talked through creaks, groans, and hisses, as old houses are apt to do. Latvia ran though hallway after hallway, finding himself growing more and more panicked. He ended up in a wide room with several doors and hallways branching off it. The biggest door started to slowly swing open. Latvia cried out in fear, the door opened further—

Estonia stepped inside Russia's house confronted by a weeping Latvia. The Estonian quickly swept his younger brother into his arms and started to soothe him. Latvia's wailing quieted and turned into simple sniffles. Estonia handed him a tissue. "Blow," he gently commanded. Latvia blew.

"Hey now, what's wrong?" Estonia asked when Latvia seemed capable of speech again.

Latvia sniffled again. "Ru-russia called L-liet into his ch-chambers a-and th-there are th-those strange n-noises again, o-only tonight they were l-louder than usual a-and y-you weren't th-there…"

Estonia gently ruffled his brother's soft downy hair. "I'm here now, so there's nothing to be worried about. Let's go back to bed, all right?"

Latvia smiled up at his older brother. "O-okay."

When the two got back to the bedroom, they found Lithuania pacing, biting his nails, a habit he only indulged in when he was feeling especially panicky. He saw Latvia and let out a cry, promptly scooping us the boy into his arms. "Where were you?! I was so worried about you!"

Latvia explained what had happened in a trembling voice. Lithuania scolded him something fierce, but Latvia could tell his brother didn't mean it, so it didn't make him cry. Afterwards the three of them returned to the large bed that they shared, Latvia smooshed in the middle of the other two. He drifted off to sleep smiling.
