edit: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can people stop critiquing this piece? It's like a year old now and I'm well aware of my past mistakes here! :'D
If you really want to help me improve, please check out newer pieces in my gallery.

Decided I needed to make new reference sheets for the cast of TAG - there are a few small changes here and there and the text has been updated :3

Changes to Micki are mostly simplification, the scarf was largely unnecessary for the climate she lives in, and I kept forgetting to draw in the silver hair clip she wore, so I've removed those. The anklet was annoying me too so that's gone, but that's about it really C:

Ah, that's better :'D

Art & Character belong to me!

It's funny how much this looks like my recent character I made up!
She has pink hair, blue eyes, bike shorts, and a rainbow shirt which laces up around her neck. She is also a fairy, and her name is Iris...But she featured in my Pokemon Thingy, which makes no sense whatsoever cause they have no fairies...Oh well! ^_^;

This is really really good, btw! I love you style!

Wow, She's a very cute character. Gotta love anime style, it's always attractive no matter how anyone looks at it. Oh! Um, hi! Tenchi here! Interpretation is the gift that I'm blessed with! I can read art like I can read a stop sign! XD Interpreting art is a fun challenge for me that helps to sharpen my wits, and makes for a great personal discipline in attention to details. A military training that I thought I can practice also. Well here goes........

The first thing that I've notice are the fun color scheme. It really goes well with her character description. The symbols are great in the support as well. Love, peace, joy, all around a very great character with a good head on her shoulders. Hm, there's not much more I can really say actually because just about every detail I can think of has already been mentioned here in her profile. Hm.......well, guess I'll just dive a little deeper in my interpretations...wow this one's a tough challenge. Cool, I think I got it, the white padding on her right arm, reminds me of the style of armor that samurai's would wear, the glove on her left, is another element that I notice as well. Although the description pretty much covers it, she's perhaps a defensive type of fighter. In some ways, but she can switch to the offensive if need be. The white of her right arm and the glove on her right hand represents a balance. The white on her arm represents defence, her glove on the left represents offense. The star necklace with two blue orb , may represent a sort of scale that balance the two. She's a character of stability, who knows what she wants and is not afraid to pursue her dreams. Her dreams are quite simple, and it shows allot in what she values mostly. The color blue and green, is a great combo that indicates calm and collective, down to earth, but very outgoing, as the bright colors seems to indicate allot. The deep reddish brown is a feminine flare along with the her golden eye color, that shares to me, her passions and values. The color cold in her eyes may represents very powerfully, her likes, and it shares to me a value for the kodak moments in life. All the simple but beautiful moments are captured in her memories as golden days to cherish, to defend and even fight for. Well, that about concludes my interpretation. I like to challenge myself to go deep in depth to find more meanings in every art works. It's a fun thing that I enjoy and it is also my personal way of showing my appreciation for art and the hard work, the passion, and inspiration that any artist puts into it. I always like to acknowledge that in the hopes that artist will feel encourage to continue to excel in their giftings as will I. And besides we artist gotta stick together. No one understands the life of an artist better than we do. DA is such a great community. Great art work once again.

That is quite an interpretation! To be completely honest, I've never really put that much thought into it, although to see that kind of symbolism in it is very interesting. I definitely like your idea of the balance between defense and offense; a sort of yin/yang motif, a philosphy of life that suits Micki very well!
Cherishing simple memories, being outgoing, pursuing her dreams... you seem to understand her character so well. It's nice to know that she conveys herself so easily, it means I'm doing something right with her portrayal :'D
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, and your kind words

Your very welcome. Art is such a visual language that it speaks to me. Not many people really take time to see what makes a character or drawing, what it is. They just settle for what ever looks good to their preferance, but never look into nor explain why they like that art work. So it's like you'll never know what they like about it, so what ever you did, you can exploit it more and be motivated to do better. Everyone has a reason why they like something, but no one's talking on DA, it's like it's some huge taboo to say why they like a certain art or somthing. I'll never understand how anyone thinks anymore, it's beyond me. XD Oh well, if it distinguish me from everyone else, than I guess that's fine by me. I like to stand out anyway. But still, I hope to encourage everyone to show their appreciation for art and really give a thoughtful feedback. It doesn't hurt to try. Nothing elaborate or fancy, just an appreciation in the way a person would describe a nice car. The engine, the paint job, the steering, same thing with art. It's not hard to do really. All I can do is lead by example, and hope everyone catches on. Every artist deserves to be noticed and appreciated. And besides, we could have paid to view art, since this is free, it's the least any of us could do. You put in allot of thought and work into what you draw. For me to simply fave without comment, or a simple "it's awesome", doesn't quite do you're hard work justice. What you put together wasn't an overnight project, but it took planning and inspiration. Allot goes into what you draw. And other artist should appreciate you're efforts especially since you're posting them for us to see for free. I think that makes allot of sense. And besides too many people take art for granted. The lack of thoughtful feedback is the result. If they have time to message one another, than they have enough time to share what they like about your work. Why not? There's plenty of elements to talk about. This reminds me of a cartoon, that color makes me feel that way, that style inspires me so, and so forth. Art is also a visual reflection of our life and our emotions, it's how we express ourselves. It's a visual journal as well. I can go on writing about this all day, but I can only stress the importance so much. But being an example is all I can do for now. And besides, I love and appreciate art, even if I'm the only artist who shows this, interpreting or giving thoughtful feedback, it is part of who I am as an individual. I'll never change that about myself. When I give attention to details, I benefit from that, because it sharpens my wits on so many levels. It's actually part of the military disciplines that is practice to this day. So if anything, most people are missing out on the opportunity. I'm practically giving away allot of secrets and it's all here in my writing for the taking. Not that it is any secret, but it's basically how you can get connections on DA. Especially if you want to go somewhere with your art works. They say you have to pay money to make some, but in the same way you gotta give feedbacks to get some as well. I give more feedbacks than I ever recieve any, but I'm in it for the love of art, so lack of feedbacks don't really phase me much, but it helps once in awhile to know that I'm appreciated. I am a human being with feelings too after all. XD Well, I'm really glad that you enjoyed the feedbacks. I really do appreciate your's and everyones creativity, and this is my own way of showing it. Thanks for sharing your art work to the community.

It's very nice to know that someone out there is putting thought and effort into making an actual response as opposed to just a passing comment, and I feel very complimented that you should take this time for me. I only wish I could be as insightful! Whenever I leave comments, I do make sure it isn't just a simple "cool" or whatever, but I often find I have trouble really looking into the deep meaning of things. I suppose it's because for me, I don't consciously put that much thought into everything I do within a piece or design - I do art mostly for fun, not as a refined expression of my emotions or such an artistic statement - so I don't readily spot these things in my own work, let alone others'.
But several people have pointed out many deep rooted and interesting things within my work, a symbolism or gesture that I hadn't spotted, and it really makes me think about the subconscious choices I make! I am trying to think more actively about my intentions with a piece, what I mean to convey, and genuinely work towards that rather than the minimal "whatever looks cool" train of thought... and I suppose a good step towards that would be to identify such things in others' works.
I feel quite like sitting and staring and really thinking about a piece now. Thank you for the inspiration, these types of discussions seem to be few and far between although I am sure they are what sites like this were originally founded on.

Your very welcome. yeah, art is very deep. My mom taught me how to draw by having me draw anything that the music she plays makes me feel. That was the foundation that I build the rest of my art education on. It's as much a universal language as music. In fact music is just another form of art within sound, just as lighting set ups are a form of art for photography, as photography is another form of art. The clothes we wear is a form of art too, it expresses how we choose to portray ourselves. Hair style, colors, all these things are creativity of what we create to communicate who we are and how we feel. Perhaps the best example of art as communication is the stop sign. It's designed for us to recognize that the red and white symbol is a clear warning to stop just as the sign is written as well. Art has a major significance in our lives. Even the art of cartoon characters are just as important. People can relate to certain characters or find admirable qualities that may inspire them to want to strive for. Allot goes into art and it's an amazing discovery. When I look at an art work I literally explore the mind and world of that artist. It's fun to think that way, to be able to go to eachother's world and experience what that artist experienced at the time of creation. It's part of the major reason why I get such a kick out of interpretation, My imagination will take me to places in your art, and I'll find allot of cool discoveries. It's fun and challenging all at once. ^^

You know, I've always noticed many of my friends think I'm odd to spend so much time with my art, they think it's silly or weird and antisocial; a lot of people I know are also of the opinion that art as a subject in school is pointless. But I guess they don't realise that art is in everything not just from the great museum works but in products and services we use every day; more and more in modern life is art experiencing an actual practical application. And yet, at the same time this mere utilisation of art as a commodity may be responsible for the downfall of values not only within art itself (i.e. the vast amounts of younger users on this site creating and viewing inappropriate content) but also in our responses to it (i.e. thoughtless one word comments). Not only is art fantastic in the sense of design but also as an exploration of many of the philosophical and spiritual concepts of humanity and sometimes I feel we should go back to that more. Not necessarily entirely, after all I enjoy "lighter" works like simple designs and things such as comics so as to not be constantly weighed down by deep-rooted symbolism but perhaps we need to explore that origin as a basis for our works to better our understanding.

Tenchi8 In reply to hostage-fiver [2010-11-20 22:48:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, lighter stuff is certainly cool. Art is also entertaining also. Gotta have the best of both things. I've visited other galleries where some artist have favorited art works of the serious kind, but there was no trace of any fun stuff. I thought to myself, man, not a anime fan, cartoon or anything, just down right serious to the T. That's kinda boring. There has to be at least a healthy balance of both things. Or at least an occasional interest to lighten the loads of weight from reality. Besides, what's not to like about anime? It's popular because, well, it's got everything! XD Yeah I do enjoy comics allot also. Comics are just as valueable as they are entertaining too. It's another way to tell an interesting story.

Indeed we artist gotta stick together. No one understands us better than we do. XD

I agree, balance is the key! I admit all I tend to post here is my manga stuff, but I do a lot more variety of work for my actual art class. I just can't say I like it enough to consider posting it, aside from it not being particularly relevant to my gallery here. But of course, people who do cartoon/manga styles should also try to gain a basic understanding of realism, as people who draw realism should try to understand cartoon styles. But in the end all drawing must come from your own inspiration not necessarily from life or cartoons~
