Ooo I like her. Quite colourful and yet still dark and eerie.

The only clowns I like are those venetian carnival inspired Harlequins. They have really cool masks or make up. And they usually look more melancholic or romantic than spooky.
But yeah, the classic clown is really unsettling. I am not really afraid of them, but there is something about them that really unnerves, yes, annoys me even. It's probably the forced and fake happiness. So no wonder that they are perfect for creepy weirdo characters.
>Her hair is barbed on the ends and most likely prehensile...
Not only is this a really cool idea, but that's probably a finally realistic explanation for large, gravity defying ponytails, as seen in many animes XD I am 100% sure anime hair is put on some complex wire construction…

I'm not fully afraid of clowns, but I have never liked them. I think it's the idea behind the mask of clowns, mascots and Santa/Easter Bunny that always bothered me. I mean who would do that for a living? lol Then I again I cosplay, so I should speak for myself. She is nice and creepy alright!

I saw a mentally challenged clown at a circus, and I know it's not his fault but when you are a kid you don't know what that is so he just seemed scary. I look back now and know it's my own fears as a child rather then him. But masks can be scary,
True I don't. I like to dress up but to a point! lol That's why I haven't been Batgirl yet, the mask looks uncomfortable!

How old were you when you saw that clown? The only time I saw clowns was at a distance. Once when I went to the circus was really little and then later on in elementary school. One of the preppy kid's mothers performed as a clown named "Giggles" but no one beyond kindergarten thought she was funny.
Well, you could make a cute cateye glasses type mask? : )

Little. We were porbably under 7. I just remember that and then wanting to see the tiny horse, but I was with my aunt who wouldn't pay the side show to see him. Now I'm guessing it was a mini horse which I have now seen. lol
True. There isn't a con this year, so I"m not sure if I'm still going to make my 40s or 50s Batgirl. I am getting the dress though! I hope it fits!

Why wouldn't your aunt pay? Hell, now I'd probably much rather see the sideshows than the circus itself.
I saw the dress. It's so freaking pretty! <3

No money, I think. True, but we were little and I think she claimed we bought cotton candy and spent out money.
Thanks so much! I love it. Just needs the tulle underskirt to make it stay where it needs to.

Colorful, dark, creepy and amazing! If only I could pull off those amazing creepy grins and such. I wonder if your clown lady fits in your own fictional universe somewhere.

Any ways, you have caught my attention with your art work. And you're now on my Watch List.
PS: I look forward to seeing more art work from you ^-^

She's beautiful! Makes me happy if I can inspire more clown characters as there are not nearly enough of them out there <3 And she juggles eyeballs just like Boogle, they'd be the best of friends. XD LOVE the stomach mouth idea and execution! The shading looks great, even though I've always heard that shading with gray is a big "no-no". It looks super colorful despite this ^^

Thank you, and I really do like Boogle. She's a cutey...Penanggalan monster type aside that is. That's more of a grotesque beauty than cute. XD
I'm not sure if Serendipity and Boogle would get along or not since Boogle seems like a sweetheart and Serendipity is...well, kind of evil. XD
I've never heard anything about shading in greyscale being a bad thing since artists like Artgerm and Candra do it as well. I can understand how it would make things harder since I've noticed even when using a gradient map my skin tones turn out a bit muddy. On the plus side it's A LOT faster and it's easier to make sure your shading is consistent. I may just us greyscale for shading things like clothes and hair that goes gradient like Serendipity's here and shade skin and eyes (eyes being something I don't do in greyscale and wind up painting in even before I lay out my flat colours) in colour.
Anyway, I'm rambling. I'm glad you like her...and also thanks for the watch!

I noticed using greyscale as a shading base doesn't offer the best in colorful contrast since you're not necessarily deciding the colors you're using for the shadows themselves, however it's certainly a stylistic choice. And I wouldn't really call it a "no-no." Also, you can always tweak it as needed. When I feel like getting real in-depth, I may start with the greyscale and then overlay or shade in other hues and colors by hand, depending on what feels right. It's especially useful for folks who shade well, but are still practicing with color. I've seen plenty of professionals utilize this technique for overwhelmingly gorgeous results.
I'm glad you could try something new with this technique! I wish I could find the original post that had me try it out forever ago, but there's plenty more tutorials. I ADORE her spiny hair tips and tummy-mouth! Your monstrous creativity never ceases to astound me, Hotaru!

Meh, I wouldn't follow my methods tbh. I just kind of experiment and try and figure it out as I go along. I would recommend looking up tutorials. Also, my approval should mean nothing! Do what you want!

But but but your art is awesome and you're so awesome you handed me one of your old characters designs. You need to update your DA journal when you have Streams so I can at least remember to check and watch since I get to see how you work, find new music to listen to and chat. XD
Anyway, I just like seeing how other people work and then I try it myself. : )
I also wanted to name a character "Roz" (since I've been watching reruns of Night Court lately), but I didn't want to step on your toes. ^.^;

Pfffft, you're so strange! I do not own the name Roz, and do not have any fucks for its regular use by a million other people.
Thanks so much for the compliments! I don't think you give yourself enough credit; I've seen so much more activity from you in the past couple of years than I ever saw when our paths met. You're a wonderful artist, and your dark stuff is always inspiring! I'll try and keep my Journal updated, I s'pose. I just get so little activity here on dA. I've honestly considered just dropping it if it wasn't for return commissioners. How come you're not on Tumblr?

HotaruThodt In reply to InkyBrain [2016-04-01 06:56:39 +0000 UTC]
Of course I'm strange, although I highly doubt we'd be friends if I wasn't strange. LOL
Well, I didn't want you thinking I named a character Roz because you did. : D
Awww, you flatter me! Hell, you're one of the artists who inspired me to move away from animu shit. Hell, I'm moving my NeverRealms universe into a more horror-based direction because you inspired me. : D
I'd love it if, when you got the time, you'd give me some feedback on my latest piece/newest character. : )
Well, if you want some activity on DA, you could try the thumbshare forums. If I feel a piece doesn't have enough feedback I go there. : )
I'm on Tumblr, but I just reblog shit. My main is RaventheShadmock (where I specifically reblog cats) and HotaruThodt is where I reblog shit I like or might need to look up later like tutorials. XD

Awwwwwwwe, givin' me feels over here!!!
I'd be happy to give you any advice, although honestly I feel like I have about as much trained and artistic professionalism as a 12-year-old with crayons. LOL
You should really post your art some time on Tumblr! The horror scene is kind of nonexistent as far as art and weird shit goes, but they're still there! in small numbers! Strange folk, UNITE!

And honestly, Tumblr is not as full of the radical, irrational fem-nazi's as anti-feminists would like to paint it as. Hell, a lot of people would probably appreciate it!
