hyenas are not canines, but are in fact felines

They aren't in the family felidae, actually. They're in the suborder feliforma but so are things like binturongs, civets, mongooses, and genets.
It's like how Red Pandas, coatis, skunks and bears are in the suborder caniformia along with canines.

Yeah, at a local zoo near my home town. They have two of these striped hyenas there. Surprisingly, they don't seem to mind the snow.

Thank you! I sometimes have to travel a couple hours or more to go to a new zoo but I always think it's worth it. Going to zoos is my favorite hobby, lol. I have a nice Canon Powershot S5IS which is pretty good at getting through fencing and bars on the exhibits.

It's a fun hobby! My two favorite types of zoos trips are to a zoo I've never been to before (to see new animals) or to a new I've been to regularly because I love learning each of the animals names and personalities. Part of getting good zoo photos is to know the animals. I can tell when one of them is about to do something exciting because you start recognizing their body language

Yeah... that's the major downside. The nice thing is, my mother is also really loves photography so we tend to go together and split the expenses. It's usually the gas expense that is the worst. Most of the zoos have pretty decent admission (especially in the winter! Zoos are the most fun in the winter, lol).
