Description 5 month old African lion cubs, Murphy and his sister, Coky, with their older brother, Donovan on a snowy winter day at the Utica Zoo. Donovan loved playing in the snow when he was a small cub but Murphy and Coky seem to prefer curling up against their brother to keep warm. Their parents recently went to live at another zoo but these three will all stay at the Utica Zoo and grow up together. It will be fun to watch them all get big, especially the boys when their manes begin to fully grow in.

Murphy and Coky were born this past summer on June 5, 2012 and Donovan was born May 11, 2011.

I have to say, this photo is almost PERFECT. The poses and expressions on the faces of the two cubs are amazing! If it weren't for big brother photo-bombing in the background it would be a perfect photo!

Haha, I know, right? I completely agree with you on that. Since I know the lions, especially the big brother, I still really like it since it's such a Donovan-thing to photo-bomb like this, lol. From a photography perspective though, he basically messed up the entire balance of the image. Oh Donovan...

Thank you! I live pretty far away from the zoo now so she gets to see them more often then me. But over Thanksgiving week they were really active and I got a bunch of good shots! Having lion cubs each summer has really done wonders at reviving this zoo ~

It sounds as though the lions enjoyed Thanksgiving -- apart from the cold, that is! *BRRRRRRRRRR*

The siblings are wonderful! I can definitely see why/how the young lions have revived the zoo! So cute!!

Although parents Bakari and Monni will be sadly missed.

Haha, I'd say that they did. I'm happy the zoo is trying to get them used to the cold. A lot of zoos take the lions off exhibit for most of the winter. It would be so sad to miss watching these guys during those months!

The lions have really helped and this summer a baby sea lion was also born who brought in some attention. The zoo is under new management and they're doing a great job so far! I heard they'll be getting a bunch of new animals in the spring too (including, from what I've heard, some spotted hyenas!)

That they will. I believe they're still together though so at least they weren't separated. The zoo said that (because they're still fairly small) they wouldn't be able to afford to feed 5 adult lions and continue growing the zoo. At least they were being responsible and realistic about it. While having an entire pride would be amazing, it would really be expensive too.
