Description This has been lurking on my usb drive for a little while, but I'm not sure now I'll find time to finish it so here is the rough version.

Thowra from the Silver Brumby books (by Elyne Mitchell. My favourites when little!) is often described as leaping around a rocky mountainous landscape... I have no idea what the real Cascades look like and doubt I'll ever see them myself, but in my imagination it was something like this. Dramatic

I adore this painting, it is utterly one of my favourite things I have ever seen on here. My mum was the reason I started reading these books as a child, and she wants some artwork to hang up on her wall. This would be an ideal Christmas present, but I've noticed that it's not available to buy. Would it be possible for me to discuss the idea of a commission similar to this instead??

I like the oil painting textures. I'm not usually a fan of digital art but this is quite good. There's a kind of sense of motion that I haven't yet been able to figure out how to do in my own art.

It's ok, lol. I didn't mean to shout so sorry There was a movie, I think but it was only loosely based on the books - the Man from Snowy River!

You definitely should! Nope, not animated.

Large and craggy basically :V This is the cascades: [link] in summer at least. Though oddly they've been getting snow in mid summer sometimes recently.
I love this pic though :V
But yea, the Aussie Alps are very bouldery and craggy. Even under all the trees X3

ohnoes, link is 403 forbidden :/ I guess the only thing missing from my imaginary Thowra world is trees, hehe. I always see the mountains as sheer and cliff-strewn, with open grass valleys in between. Of course there are a few small patches of snowgums in my mind's eye, for the kangaroos to hide in, lol. not that I even know what snowgums look like... not in the flesh anyway, only from pictures. When I was little, I basically imagined thin and rubbery white trees, hahaha... snow + gum!!

Aw well, a quick google image seach should give you a good summation XD Gum trees have really smooth bak usually, but they have really gnarly forms. I actually had a Silver Brumby OC when i first read the books (and holy shit that was over a decade ago dammit I feel old ) and she uses the trees as he best cover since her coat blends best with snowgums.
Thee's a lot of bushland still covering the mountains whee famers/tourist places haven't cleared it into fields, but up higher when the snowline stats they thin. I've been up the highest peak - Kosciouzco (thats spelt wrong, ffff) and it's bald as anything with just boulders and grass everywhere.

Got to see real brumbies when i was up there about 2007 too (it was a bay stallion with a little herd so I immediately told myself it was Storm :V ). It's... It is had to describe what our bushlands are like unless you experience them firsthand. But Snowgums are a hardwood, and since most trees are eucalypts, you have that overall smell and red sap marks all over the place, and since the summers are generally unbearably hot and the winters dry, the bush is crackly as hell, so it's hard for anything to move unheard, especially hard-toed animals. The general atmosphere is harsh.
Also sorry for my spelling, my keyboard is failing.

Good to see you drawing Thowra again! You've got the landscape pretty spot on. The cascades are basically tall rocky mountains that have plenty of snow in the winter. Love this!

well, I can see a lot of anatomy flaws especially! but I'm glad you like everything as it is. Someone once told me pieces should look good at every stage... (This is not true in my opinion lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

valentina-86 In reply to howlinghorse [2012-02-24 16:26:06 +0000 UTC]

No, I don't think it's true either. Sometimes you have to change the way of working on something to make it look good in the end (I draw, too: [link] ).
Here the anatomy is fine enough because it's not detailed. It's living because it's so rough.
I wish I could paint like that more often, but I do a lot of detailed commissions, so I don't have much energy left to try something else...

It is dramatic. Like balancing on the brink of destruction. I like the contrast of the warm light agaist the oppressing darkness. Very nice work just as it is but on the other hand I might like to see where you'd go with it if you find the time to work on it further.

Hehe, painterly and rough is certainly a good look more often than not. (AKA why I'm so often lazy and don't finish things!)
