Description Well.. more charcoaling. It's an addiction you know.
The original photograph is credit to ~SharysAogail and can be found here: [link]
Dear ~SharysAogail . I found your photo on the wonderful ~Equine-Resource and I hope you don't mind I drew it. I changed it a little, this was deliberate (Basically I calmed the pose down a bit, its not so drastic, nor is the eye rolling, and stuff)

I'm still not happy though...far too splotchety, scruffy and flat. expect more experimentation soon, peoples

(Oh, and the camera absolutely SLAUGHTERED it, it's nicer in person)

I really love how you've changed this from the original photo. It looks so relaxed and as though it's simply trying to nose away the flies. Very nice

The charcoal-ness is wonderful...so messy i loves it

Keep it up!

The shapes and pose are so cute. charcoal is sooo hard to work with, I think you're doing well. I think the trick is in the level of contrast, because it's such a thick dark messy medium, you can easily end up with too much on the paper, if you know what I mean. Not that I know anything about charcoal, I don't even use the stuff. LOL

Yes, it is difficult to control and has a mind of its own... Practice can make it exceptionally beautiful though! *knows from looking at other people's drawings*

true...
Do you use pencils or the proper sticks? I only have pencils but even those are a bit daunting to me...

howlinghorse In reply to AmandaDrage [2006-08-31 22:18:03 +0000 UTC]

Sticks, or sometimes just lumps of charcoal off the fire (When we had an open fire, that is) I find those more solid, and better for certain techniques, I'd LOVE some pencils, lol. Not that I've ever tried them, but they sound cool.

LOL, proper artist! I'll have to draw a masterpiece with a lump of charcoal... on the back of an old and splintered door. Or something.

That's a great pose. I'm always surprised at how flexible horses are. Whenever I'm drawing them, I always think; "nah... they can't have their head all the way back there like that",.... but they can! This is a very nice drawing. I'm glad you focused only on certain parts of the horse. Good job!
