As you placed this into the No Mercy folder that means you want a brutally honest Critique from #thephotographyunion .

I enjoy solitary, peaceful feel of this work. The lone stand in a quiet area out of the way of the normal hustle and bustle of life in my circles makes for a serene depiction of a day of enjoyment and a commune with nature.

The exposure seems to pull in the opposite direction of this overall theme however. Typically I associate a bright, stark exposure with chaos, pain and disharmony. As such I’m finding I’m having to work hard to get what “I want” out of this piece rather than allowing the picture to guide me. I also find myself tipping my head to the right and I’m not entirely sure why. If the contours are off somewhere it’s very subtle as I can’t seem to point to it but it’s making my OCD kick in a bit.

Overall, while I like this piece personally I’m also thinking it is dwarfed by the talent in the rest of your port. Many of your works are incredibly vibrant with rich color. The black and white shots that I do see are filled with much more contrast and depth leading to some exhilarating shots. I’m reticent to offer advice on how the shot could be fixed because it’s obvious from the rest of your examples that your eye and talent for landscapes far exceeds my own.

Amazing... I do a lot of work with snow (but I haven't posted any). I love the pattern on the right. The only thing I would do different is to "bracket" a series of shots throughout the day to get rid of the tower's shadow that crosses the road. I might even darken the road to get rid of the tire tracks and play games with the depth. LOL, I just wish I had access to any location that majestic.

thanks for your comment.
You are right about the shadow, but I actually like the tire tracks, gives the road some structure.

Amazing! You managed to pull off "high contrast" without sacrificing your range of tones. Haven't seen this done successfully very often. Love the composition and lighting. Everything comes together to make a very solid winter photo.

this is beautiful, so fluent.
have you tried a square crop of the right hand side? past the road on the left seems a bit of a waste

hquer In reply to sloughmo [2010-01-07 20:15:45 +0000 UTC]

thanks,
haven't tried a square crop since I'm usually not a big fan of this - but it could work here. Thanks for the idea - I will try it out

I disagree with sloughmo about the square crop.. I really like the dark shadows on the left side; they tie into the darkness of the tower.
Very nice picture.

Thanks and I agree,
I tried to square crop it but it didn't work. The dark shadows on the left are an important part of the picture
