Beautiful shot. I'm trying to decide if this looks more like ice or cake frosting. What do you think?

I'm always for the ice part
But it's hard to tell, IR simply looks strange

Yeah, it's a little weird, but it looks cool. I don't think my little camera can do that, but maybe the D90 I'm looking at buying will be able to? Hard to say, but I'd love to try IR-photography.

I have no idea how good the D90 is for IR, depends on what sensor is in it. If it's the D300 sensor (which I think it is because both are pretty new cameras) then it's not really good for IR (I have read several times that the D300 can't do IR very well, even after modification). But some of the older models (I think D40 and/or D60) are very good for IR. With those it should even work with just having long exposures (and without modification of the camera). But IR sadly only really gets interesting if you have modified the camera (removing the internal IR blocking filter) - but this sadly means that the camera becomes shit for visible light.

Heh, I wouldn't mess with my SLR like that. I'd mess something up and not have a camera at all. Have you done any IR with 35mm cameras? I know there's film and filters for all that, I just don't know if it would also require modification like you mentioned with the DSLRs...

I really have no Film experience, sorry. Most likely you would need some special film which then would be really expensive again.

Well, nothing a good Google search won't be able to tell me then, eh?

What I saw wasn't too bad actually. I think it was about the same price as your typical 35mm film. I'm not sure about the filters and whatnot, but I assume their probably a bit more expensive as they block wavelengths of light instead of just tinting or distorting the image.
