"...and magic".

LOL. No wonder it looks so good. All artists should sprinkle in some magic.

Simply a wonderful piece of art regarding Yggdrasil. It gives a different look at the World Tree than other interpretations of it. I really like how you use the skull and the eagle to emphasize their position. And the dark atmosphere around the tree is designed inn a sublime way. An awesome piece of art indeed!

Tree is such a nice and earthen way to describe a cosmic map... and "god" so very ambiguous word for creatures that dwell in it.

A tree is a great metaphor for the structuring of the universe, and human life and consciousness... the 'gods' are often just anthropomorphic expressions of aspects of the human condition or natural forces... it all weaves together.

Very true.

" the 'gods' are often just anthropomorphic expressions of aspects of the human condition or natural forces... "

Often so, sometimes that sickly vague word is used to picture very common and normal extraterrestials coming to a visit.

Nicely done! I'm not particularly into the skull though... but I really like the brushwork and how you made the whole thing seem carved!

The skull is symbolic of the netherworld realm of the goddess Hel, (found at one of the three roots of Yggdrasil) linked to the unconscious and death. My painting is a very minimalist version of Yggdrasil, so using a skull seemed like an efficient symbol for this area of the tree. I'm happy you liked my technique! Thanks for commenting

It will take a while, the Tree will be the finishing touch, and yours will be one of the Yggdrasils that I'll show at the shop so the guy will inspire with 'em...

Was the face intentional?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hrefngast In reply to Neneplayswithpaper [2011-02-14 13:26:11 +0000 UTC]

If you mean the skull then yes. If you can see somethng else in there then no, but I would be interested to know what you're seeing Thank you for commenting

Neneplayswithpaper In reply to Hrefngast [2011-02-14 17:00:19 +0000 UTC]

The skull you mean, is that the one at the bottom in middle? Because what I was seeing was part of the background, especially the spirally circles where the eyes would be.

Hrefngast In reply to Neneplayswithpaper [2011-02-14 18:14:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes I see what you mean Face was not intentional, but I find the good thing about painting in a loose style is that things emerge unexpectedly and bring a little ambiguity to an image

And especially with the title of it, I see the face as that of All Father Odin.
