WOW! That's amazing! the silhouette is so realistic! What kind of tools and materials did you use to bend the hubcaps?

And, seriously, I laughed with joy when I read "made from old car hubcaps/wheel trims collected from the side of the road." So super cool! I can't say I hate clichΓ©s really, 'cause I'm a corny person, so: "Another man's trash is another man's treasure." I love the concept of using literally trash and making such great work from it.

Is it possible for you to upload any other shots of this, like from the other side? I'd like to see the tail.

Thanks for the kind words..
I made this as a commission a few years back when I was not as confident and I remember having to focus very hard in order to make it look like a husky rather than a wolf or german shepard.
Next time I get the chance I'll have a look through my photos, but as this was pre-digital don't hold your breath! I'll have to scan them in if I can find them amongst my piles of junk..
In answer to your technical question - I don't use heat. Some hubcaps are flexible and others aren't. I use whatever properties they have to get the effect I want. i just use reclaimed wire to stitch them together. Simple is best I reckon.
And best of all - my materials expenses are next to nothing

Makes sense that you had to work so hard to make it look like a husky - there's pretty small details that tell different breeds apart, especially when working with 3D media. (Or at least that's just me with almost exclusively 2D media experience talking. )

Thanks for sharing! What do you use to bend the flexible ones? Brute force?

How did you first get interested in this form of art? I don't see a lot of metal art around, and what I do see usually doesn't have this kind of freedom with shaping.

I've been interested in reclaiming and altering things for as long as I remember. It's a feeling generated by the sense of waste that's all around us in the west. I spent a year in India fifteen years ago and the use and re-use of everything driven by poverty really stimulated me to push the idea forward. The hubcaps are plastic by the way - this makes it easy to bend them. I've made one fish out of metal hubcaps and that was a lot more work!

RevelingRexan In reply to HubcapCreatures [2014-04-13 22:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah, plastic hubcaps makes mores sense. I had no idea there was such a thing, actually!

And that's a good point; waste becomes so commonplace over here, it's rarely thought about. I know when I was younger - like five or seven and was learning about litter - I had a wish to travel about and pick up all the trash I saw on the side of the road. Never had such a creative thought, though. Did you see any artists over in India using materials like what you do? Or was everything you saw for necessity? Or neither of the above and I'm being uncreative?

Once you start digging around online you can find some exceptional artists working with recycled materials - but none that I know of so far in India. It was more a case of 'nothing is useless' which meant that even something like old plastic bottles were a valuable item in poorer communities.
