βInferno redesignβ by hulkdaddyg
First, I really like the design of this character, heβs quite the badass. I read some of your description of this guy and his powers and I think if controls energy and not actual fire, Iβd just ditch it. Plus the flame effect, while realistic doesnβt seem to work with the image. Iβm not sure what the blue is in the background, is it fog or ice or water? I like the idea of the second light source from the rear creating a halo, but some definition as to what that is would help. And honestly, I wonder if removing that would be better? Sometimes not being so literal can really work to your advantage. Something to note is when you are in the drawing and inking stage, you need to make it a point to define your light source so you donβt contradict yourself with the colors. To have the blue halo would mean his interior would be mostly in shadow, but then the issue becomes the frontal flame (light source) making them both work will take some planning. Iβd suggest shooting some reference to see if it can be done in reality (and even if it canβt that doesnβt mean you shouldnβt pursue it, you just need to figure a way to make it believable). Another minor thing is watch the edges of the image, the hands are a little too close making the image look cramped. Again, I really like the look of this character and I like the dichotomy of the energies that he controls. I think with a little more planning ahead of time you could create an image that shows all this off in an original and harmonious way. Good luck!

I really appreciate the feedback. I am even more glad you pointed out the things that bothered me, it let's me know I'm on the right track. I really like the idea of dropping the ice cloud in back, but more to the point maybe I should drop the fire(he controls hot AND cold- not necessarily flame) and make some kind of red steam.
Thanks a lot!

Nice design.
The pose makes him seem very menacing.
Woe unto whoever makes a habit of crossing this guy.
Those are swordhandles jutting from his back, yes?

This guy looks really good, his style looks borderline villain so it gives him a sinister look here!

He looks intense! The pose and design looks great, but I think the highlights from the flames should be larger, since he's practically surrounded by fire.
I recently discovered some great fire brushes for Photoshop that might help you spice this image up: [link]

Inferno is not meant to be mysterious at all. I got lazy with the bg which in his case is necessary. Towering Inferno can grow to at least 70' tall which also gives him a corresponding multiplied boost in overall power. In other words big boy is not subtle!

You buried a really fine inking job with these colors, Gary.
And I thought this character was just a fire guy.

"buried" *facepalm* I'll give it another try! Thanks, Rod! He's always been able to control temperature, not necessarily ice or fire though- heat energy. Cold is just the absence of heat so it's just a matter of sucking in or pushing out heat energy for him. He generally channels his power through his swords.

Maybe it's my monitor but I cant see the inking detail on his body at all.
Maybe if you play with the levels on you color layers?

I'll try that. I was just thinking to lighten up the dark gray parts a bit more. Tsuki told me my stuff comes out too dark because I work on a laptop.

Now we can actually see the inking job you worked so hard on!
Could you see it before? Maybe Tsukijin was right.
I'm also going to suggest getting rid of the lighter grey, you dont really need it. You've already accomplished a pretty cool effect with the highlights and solid shadows. Try just the darker gray instead of the light and grey in those areas and see what you think.
