Description

Smudger managed to get his engine out by his own hands once the Mid-Sodor Railway closed down, ever since he has kept it a “secret in the mines”, and trying hard to make it steam again. While he wasn’t completely unsuccesful, his work wasn’t completly working. He eventually managed to find an old spare truck in the bushes and used that as a tender, reworked the boiler and modify the locomotive enough to make it look completely different. Soon, “Number 2” was gone and “Bertram” was here to stay. He also decided to nickname himself “The Old Warrior”, a nickname that didn’t last long in the MSR, and nobody called him that anyways.

One lucky day, he saw an engine driver come to the Mines with his tram engine and a little coach. He heard the Stout Gentleman talk about restoring the mine and thought it would be a chance for him to be really useful again.

So, when nightime came, he blew the old engine’s whistle as well as whistling with his mouth to get the crew’s attention. He did so. And after the driver, whose name was Toby Holden, discovered him and his abandonaded engine; he works in the Mine near Tidmouth Bay during the summer. And is good friends with the lads on the Little Western as well as Toby. The rest of the year, he works on the Skarloey Railway taking visitors to the many beautiful sites on the line.

He is currently known as “Bertram, the Old Warrior”, Duke remembers that nickname, he heard it somewhere but doesn’t remembers exactly...
