Description Common Potoo
Scientific name: Nyctibius griseus (Gmelin, 1789)
Portuguese: Urutau; Mãe da lua

Note: The bird's local name, "Urutau," comes from the language of the Brazilian Tupi Indians and means "ghost bird." The native Indians in the Amazon believe that the tail feathers of the Urutau protect chastity. Therefore, mothers sweep under the girls' hammocks with a broom made of these feathers.
